After 2 bow & 2 rifle hunts in Colorado, I was finally able to get a nice bull elk during the second rifle season.
My hunting buddy & I started off with a little trout fishing & then off to camp to set up near the Pike National Forest.
Once camp was set up we cut 3 truckloads of wood from the landowners property, cooked a meal & headed to bed with hopes of just seeing a good bull on Saturday opening day. Our ten man group was excited!
After a good effort in the mountains Saturday morning, decent elk sign & seeing a big mule deer, we headed off to try a different state property.
As we drove in, we saw 2 game wardens & stopped to talk with them. They gave us some fantastic information, there’s elk nearby!
Using the provided intel, we glassed & hiked hard & located some feeding elk.
We then put on a 3 mile stalk across bare grounds, through a trout steam, then through sage, over 2 fences, past curious horses & past several jack rabbits.p
We then climbed up a mesa without spooking a small group of elk that held several bulls.
With the wind hitting the right side of our faces, two of us were able to close the distance.
My buddy put a shot on a big bull at 230 yards & moments later I was able to shoot at a big bull at 200 yards.
His elk refused to die & needed three bullets, mine needed two with last one going through both lungs.
What an exiting moment to shoot 2 bull elk in a matter of minutes...a double!
The remaining days in camp included processing meat, camp hosts/cooks & sleeping in.
The weather was great & can’t wait to go back on the future.
