I am the heaviest I've ever been and I'm sick of it. I'm on 3 different blood pressure medications and feel like absolute garbage every single day. I'm 44 and in the worst shape of my life after being in the best shape of my life at 37. I'm just shy of 5'11" and up to 215 and I should be 185 with my frame. It's time to do something about it. A torn rotator cuff has kept me out of the gym for almost two years but I have to do something. Anyone with a bad shoulder still work out? What should I try and what should I avoid?

Low impact, high yield.
Find a good rowing machine and watch what you eat. I dropped 20 lbs in 3 months doing so, though I got away from it a year or so ago when I messed my shoulder up again. I really need to get back into the swing with that. |

Get a prescription for Semaglutide it works well. Weight is all about what you eat and semaglutide knocks back the hunger feeling.

Only you can tell if a certain exercise is hurting your shoulder. Lots of different exercises for your shoulders that hopefully will not hurt. Either that or get your shoulder fixed. I really had no choice as I had a bone spur on top of my rotator cuff that cut almost every tendon and ligament in my left shoulder when I raised my elbow above my shoulder. Good luck! Hope you can get to whee you need to be! |

I get plenty of regular exercise like walking and drink only water with a couple cups of black coffee here and there. The eating is where I fall short. I eat like two grown men...and not good food. I'm in a office so much these days I definitely need to get my heart rate up more too. |

I hate being fat, but I love food more.
I also had rotator cuff surgery in February 2022. I can’t lift weights hardly at all now. |

Definitely change your diet. You can’t exercise a bad diet away. It’s mostly just self control. Educate yourself on caloric content of foods and you’ll be able to eat plenty. It won’t taste as good as what you’ve been eating but how it makes you feel is worth it. You can do it. Www.calorieking.com is a good resource for finding out calorie content.

Just eating right and cutting sugary drinks out of your diet will help a bunch. Walk on a treadmill or get on an exercise bike. One of my buddies is doing that and he's lost 20 pounds so far. He's trying to lose another 20.
He's really not necessarily eating "right" he's just not eating like a starved maniac. If you eat until you're miserable, quit doing that. |

My shoulder gives me heck. On bench, have you tried to incline it slightly and canter the weights. Sometimes a little different angle helps alot. I spin a bike quite a bit for cardio, not so hard on my knees, good luck.

You ain't in a bad way yet. You'll probably be surprised how easy you'll shed weight once you get on a treadmill and stick with it. My buddy is 6'4" 290 pounds. That son of a gun is a food eatin fool. If he can do it you'll be back to your old fightin weight in no time.

I’m about where you are at. Just changing my eating habits dropped 10 quick and it wasn’t too bad. I’m not real strict. Just cut out carbs like bread, croutons in salad, etc.
Surprisingly cauliflower substitutes have been good. And eating eggs. Sucks but hasn’t been too bad. The meat is still there. Cauliflower dishes and meat. I like to eat. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My eating was 1800 calories a day with no Cokes, Dr Peppers , no fried foods, very little alcohol and no sweets ever. Trainer wanted a 2# weight loss per week if possible. Lots of fish, chicken meat and veggies/salads. Hard getting use to it but once I did, it was easy.
After I put the weight back on, we had a weight loss challenge at the school I taught at. Stopped all carb intake and lost 11#’s the first week but thought I was going to die. Never again. Tried fasting but not for me. |

I’m in the middle of it now. My best friend had a stroke and it led to a triple by-pass (looks like 100% recovery so far). It scared me back into the gym. My work out would not impress 20 year old me. That’s is why most folks give it up. Be reasonable with your expectations
“I’m fat, I’m going to start running 3 miles a day!” Yeah, no you’re not. You’re gonna run 200 yards and pull a hammy, walk back to the house and drink a beer. Start slow and build on that so it is sustainable |

Start with a brisk walk every morning(45-60 minutes) prior to breakfast if at all possible. It will get your body started with getting metabolism going plus give you a boost of energy through out the morning.
As far as food/diet, just clean up your diet and stay away from sweet stuff and processed food. As for the bad shoulder, I would start extremely slow with stretching and range of motion type exercises. I will see if I still have the instructions the surgeon gave me after surgery. |

I was 230lbs and had a bad time getting in the mode to lose, until I decided that enough was enough just before Thanksgiving. A friend of mine turned me on to a product called Xyngular. First, I done an 8 day program that was basically a detox and now just do a morning meal replacement shake and a modified diet. As of today, I'm 209 and still losing.
I have not done any gym work up to this point, but will be incorporating that into my schedule in the next month. Had I been going to the gym, I am more than certain I would have lost more, but my schedule has just recently started to slow down so I can enjoy a normal life.....if there is such a thing. I'm 5'6" and would like to me more like 175-180lbs. If you or anyone else would like information on the Xyngular products, I'll be more than happy to share it with you. The stuff simply works and you don't starve to death. Good luck with whatever you do! |

My Dr., who once pushed it hard, won't prescribe it anymore. He told me he has seen too much in the way of bad side effects in last 15 years. Burn more than you take in.. It worked in the 70, 80 and 90's and It will work now too. There was no such thing as low T back then. Last edited by PondPopper; 03-16-2023 at 06:23 PM. |

Josh age is on your side so I know that you will have victory over the weight gain. I’m 5’11 as well and I always maintained my weight around 185……..and then I turned 40 and things changed. In the winter I would get up around 200 but it came right back off in the summer. But after 40 it took some work. Not eating after 6:00 pm helped me a lot. These days it’s impossible to eat right because of my business and schedule. I even put Kamala Harris’s picture on my refrigerator to scare me away but even that doesn’t work. You’ll be in my prayers my friend.

Josh, I went in for my semi-annual check up back in November of ‘22. I weighed 265!!! I felt like crap, and my A1C was way too high. Doc told me if I didn’t do something about my weight, I’d be on medications for Type II diabetes soon. My mom was a Type II diabetic and I didn’t want any part of that!!
Both my wife and I decided to make some life style changes. We stopped eating grains or grain products, starches, most all carbs except some complex carbs. We started eating like we were diabetics. She lost over 30# and I’m down to 205 -60#!!! We eat a lot of meat, leafy vegetables and cauliflower. We are enjoying it!! The keto food is good food!! I drink almond milk, and she bakes with almond flour. We love cauliflower rice and “mashed potatoes”!! And yes, we still save our “cheat” days for our LeBlanc’s fix!! We are both active daily but do not have a regimented workout program. This eating style works for us. We even still stop at Splendora Cafe’ but have the grilled catfish instead of fried. Terry’s grilled catfish is great too! You can do this brother!! |

Pineywoods, I'm in my mid-40s myself. 364 days ago I weighed in at 210 (5'9" male). This morning, I clocked in at 159 - less than my senior year of HS.
Things I did NOT do: Count calories Cardio Zero carbs Paleo Vegetarian (F no) Stop booze Stop diet soda Intentionally fast What worked for me: Eat when you're hungry. Up the protein, especially lean protein like venison and chicken. Shoot for 1 gram of protein per lb. of body weight. If you fall a little short that's ok. Low carb tortillas with deer chili or chicken are an absolute staple. Definite cheat code. Dairy sources of protein like Greek yogurt and cottage cheese are awesome. Two eggs every am, over easy, with a split English muffin. Plenty of fiber - broccoli, caulifower (both microwavable), canned green beans, etc. Meal prep every Sunday with an emphasis on lean meats and veggies. Healthy fats here and there - think 100 calorie packs of Almonds and a small amount of peanut butter. The occasional avocado, too. Try to fit in a simple resistance training workout - 3 per week at about 30 minutes a day. A simple dumbbell set did it for me. Good luck, dude! Keep us posted. Last edited by Lincoln Hawk; 03-16-2023 at 07:27 PM. Reason: Low carb tortillas, no fasting. |

Sets of ten as many as you can do for 20 minutes a day. Leave those weights alone…they only hurt us old men lol |

Fasting is what helped me. I now just eat dinner during the week. I just have my wife double the protein for dinner. Took a while to get used to, it is mostly mental. Saves a bunch of time too. No more meal prep on Sundays. Shorter lunch break, as I just take a 15 minute walk. Also, no mid afternoon drowsiness.

Josh, my blood pressure was going bonkers too... Have taken Lisionopril for many, many years and it worked well for me with no bad side effects... Then all of a sudden it stopped working... BP was all over the map... Now (and I'm back on Lisionpril) my blood pressure morning and evening runs 126/63 or so... No more hearing my heartbeat in by ears, pounding headaches, or just feeling crappy...
You mentioned something in your posts that you can't seem to get others in your family/household to get motivated to eat right... I'd say it's time for a little heart to heart with your bride... She's gonna have the same problem, kids too if they eat junk all the time... I'll admit it does make it better if everyone is on the same page and similar goals. I will pray for this specifically Josh. Wouldn't be a bad thing to mention from the pulpit... ask for prayer and support... just an idea. You know prayer works! I'll join you! |

90% diet and 10% exercise for weight loss...but dont' lose sight that weight lifting will reduce fat look and make you healthier. Even just doing exercises with light weights or body weight helps.
My body doesn't do well with sugars and carbs and keto works well for me along with intermitment fasting. I have found I can easily survive with one meal per day.
