Default Leupold VX Freedom & Rings??

I am more than likely going to buy my son a 7mm-08 bolt action for his b-day but that will be a different thread.

Anyway I'm thinking about getting a Leupold VX Freedom 3x9x40 for it as he is young (probably will get beat up a little) and won't be shooting long distances with it for now so I want to stay on the cheap side. I can always upgrade as he gets more experience under his belt. Before I pull the trigger any knocks on this scope or reason I shouldn't get it? I'm looking at using the 12% off code at Primary for it as that would be the best price I've seen at less than $200 t0 my door.

As a secondary question, what do you suggest for rings/mount/base? Brand, height, etc.

I have a VX Freedom in 4x12x40 on my 6.5 Grendel. I love that little scope. It is clear and actually does pretty well in low light conditions. As far as rings I have the Vortex Cantilevers on this scope but put the Pro series on the rest of my guns.

Thanks for the reply. I will more than likely still get the scope but just read the fine print on the PA code and it isn't valid for Leupold... So back to looking for a better deal.

Have you looked at Academy?

https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/leu...dCatid=5121124

They have it for $199. Cds for $299, which may be good for when he gets older and is shooting farther.

I'll nominate the sig whiskey 3. Others seem to have liked theirs and I sure did like mine that I received this week.

Also, I like warne bases and medium rings.

I'm retired Army and just bought one at Randolph AFB BX ( NE San Antonio ). $ 189 out the door ... Wife gave me the Green Light when she saw the sale add .. Lol

They go anywhere from $ 199 - 299 + Tax other places.

For all the Military or Retired Military .. Randolph AFB BX is one of the only places I saw that sells ... Handguns, Long Guns and Ammunition plus the usual hunting items ..

If you go that route stick with the 3-9. Some the lower end scopes distort when you get to 12/14x

I have the Freedom 3-9x40 on my little 223 bolt gun. Works great.

I got to take at look at this scope. It's built solid and looks good!

+1 on Warnes

I’ve always been a Leupold guy but wanted to try something different for my new tikka (7mm08 btw). I bought a Burris Fullfield 2 3x9 and have to say it’s a really good scope for the money. Put in on a set of Talley light weights and am very happy with it.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and options. I have seen the Leupold everywhere for $199 but was hoping to save 12%. I'll have to take a look at the sigs and burris now. And sounds like warne rings are the way to go.

Not sure yet. Leaning towards a Ruger American, but may go up to a Wetherby or Browning. Trying to stay in the $400-$600 range on the gun.

Howa or weatherby would be a great choice. So would a Tikka. The three are considerably nicer than the ruger american.

I ended up going with a Weatherby Vanguard in 7mm-08. I just picked it up. I still don't have a scope or rings yet though. That is still next on the list.

Burris has a combo box that has 2 scopes for like $400. They are awesome little scopes. I have the E1 on my 270 and the Fullfield II on my Ruger precision 22mag. I love the reticle in the E1. Its like a floating crosshair.

Just found them on Amazon.

Thanks. I actually just ordered the Sig mentioned above in a 3x9x50. I have heard good things about them and seen good reviews. Now I just need rings.

Will Warne medium rings work with the Sig 3x9x50 or do I need to go up to high?

I have a VX-Freedom 4-12 Tri-MOA on one of my light hunting rigs and love it. I got it for $250 new on EBay and was pleasantly surprised on the quality for the price.
I used low Talley rings.

ETA lol never mind, I see you went with the sig

Thanks, it does appear from Warne's website that high is what I need. I will get those. Thanks again.
