We Love Sutton County. Beautiful country, great people and good hunting (as long as Anthrax stays away!)

I hunted off of Baker road and I-10 for 25 years. I sure miss that area tons of deer, turkey, great axis bucks. Sutton county wildgame dinner , Rafter W,
and Sutton county steakhouse all good down that way.

We were at the steakhouse on Friday and it was not very good, but thatís just us. The onion rings where the best on the menu.

I sure wouldnít mind finding a lease in this area again. Hunted most of my life in this area on Baker Rd and again on 864. Lots of good memories.

Anybody having any luck this spring? I could have shot this guy yesterday morning, but passed.

Turkey season is a few weeks away. I sure hate that they switched us to the north zone, but it is what it is! Not hardly any birds at my place anyway, but folks with the birds would probably do much better with the earlier south zone dates.

I only have 122ac. That buck got me pretty excited when he first walked in. I watched him for quite a while. I donít think he is anything over 27Ē, so I let him walk. Iím looking for a really good buck, or a doe. Iím not saying I wonít be tempted to shoot him in the end if given more chances, but I didnít then.

Itís looking really good out there. Axis numbers seem to exploded! Very few gobbles this morning. Here are a couple of axis from this card pull. Only one seems really mature. The others seem young and for sure arenít 30inches plus

Our axis numbers have exploded too. So many I am not seeing nearly as many whitetail. We have been trying to grow our axis herd and I think we have accomplished that. Seeing all the bucks in velvet has me thinking we will have some great hunts this summer. We will be out Easter weekend feeding and chasing the big birds.

Our lease is located about a 1 1/2 miles down Sutton County Road 202. Northeast of Sonora. We lease from the guy who owns Rafters Feed Store.

Our axis deer population was growing but they have been few and far between since last summer. Not sure what is going on.

We eat at Sutton County Steakhouse on a regular basis. The food is ok. Best thing I have had there is their chicken fried steak and onion rings which several of y'all have mentioned. I hope to make a trip to the lease during the last weekend of turkey season.

Weíre heading up Easter weekend. Have any of you Sutton Co guys noticed Spring Turkey has been terrible the last 3-4 years since theyíve moved the opening dates later and later? We were there for spring break the week of March 13th and the Tomís were out and about in full force, chasing hens. By the time the season opens, most all of the hens have been bred and the Tomís are spent and not coming into calls or being vocal. This sucks especially for the kids who canít hunt them during Soring break like they used to be able to do!

Yep! The North Zone dates suck for turkey hunting!!!!

There arenít hardly any at my place anyway, but for the guys that have good turkey numbers, the later opening date for the season hurts success chances greatly!!!

Ended up shooting an axis doe Saturday evening. Unfortunately she did a ninja move and I hit her a tad back. Arrow exited almost between the shoulders right next to the spine. I think we bumped her while tracking that night. Found her the next day and boy do I feel terrible about the wasted meat.

I'm in neighboring Crocket county on a Mertz pasture and was out last weekend filling feeders. Heard some gobblers not far off from camp but never could get them to commit and come in. Hoping for more rain as well.
