Help me choose a tree for a memorial.

We are planting a tree in memory of our 6month old son that passed away. My wife and I visited Colorado shortly after losing him and we fell in love with the color change all the aspens were going thru. I know that aspens won’t grow here. Here are some things we are looking for and some info:

    - significant color change in the fall
    - strong
    - our soil is sandy
    - little to no area in yard is “full sun”
    - we will be planting in March
    - really no need to become a skyscraper

Find something native to your area (see local nursery) that will satisfy your requirements.

Sorry for your loss. We did the same thing for twins that we lost.

Cedar elm's have a lot of fall color.

I hate to hear about your loss.

Japanese Maples are smaller and have great fall colors. I am in sandy clay soil in ne Texas. I have two that are 10 plus years old and doing great. They are in partial shade also.

A dogwood will grow in partial sun. They like some shade. They have nice fall color, won't get too big, and produce nice smelling pretty flowers.

Sandy soil is likely ok since they don't like wet feet. It's your yard so you could water/fertilize as needed.
