There's a few herds left. Couple of weeks ago I saw a bunch of cows while walking along highway 100 in between the high school and HEB in port Isabel. It was private property but that area runs into the Bahia grande unit of Atascosa.
Usually means they give you boundaries that you are not suppose to leave. Most times it is defined roads and creeks, but have seen it as logging roads and old barb wire dilapidated fence lines. I have been on 1 hunt where my compartment was around 3k acres.
A lot of these places are broken up into "pastures". They usually give out 2 maps, one of the entire place and one of just your pasture. When they take you out to show you your compartment, they will go over the boundaries. You will be confined to hunt only that compartment. Some that I have been on can range from 100 acres to well over a 1,000. You come and go as you please. On the assigned blinds, they most of the times take you out and pick up at a blind that have already been set up. The compartment hunts, some may or may not have hunting blinds, so bring some stands and hunt where you want.
