    Africa

Got a little time this morning so figured I’d recap my trip that was at the end of may.

This whole deal started 3 years ago and then Covid and the whole mess started. We leave Austin on the 18th and prepare for the long flight, this was my third time ever on a plane and it’s horrible. That 16 hour trek from Atlanta to joberg sucks to say the least, I suggest every seat upgrade you can get lol.
We got there a couple days early just to see the city and get settled, we rented a apartment in rose bank and stayed for 3 days. First night we went to the grill house which is a really really nice steakhouse and we ordered a little bit of everything. First food I had in Africa was some springbok carpaccio and it was fantastic

Finally meet up with the PH’s in joberg and make the 4 hour trek to the free state. Get to the reserve we are staying at and have lunch and watch the giraffes and other critters from the lodge. Still can’t believe they introduced pigs

Yes. Same exact pigs, we kept telling them y’all gonna regret this. Apparently the locals like them, something different to hunt

My list of critters to shoot was a blue wildebeest, Impala, blesbok, and a tossup between a warthog or a springbok

First evening we set off and it’s 2 of us so we switched turns. Got on a nice blesbok but couldn’t get a shot off because of them grouping up. Had a great supper of a lamb curry stew and it was awesome, standing around the fire and still trying to get used to the beer and hanging out with the group from Louisiana we finally got some sleep.

Set out the first day and I let the guy with me go first and we went to a 1.7 million acre property that mainly had big wildebeest, springbok and Impala. Later on that day I got my first opportunity and after a 300 yard belly crawl I took aim at a huge wildebeest and put one in his shoulder quartering too at 180 yards. He took off and stopped at 500 and I sent another and off he went, 5 hours later and jumping him a few times we found him with the herd blowing blood out of his mouth but otherwise acting fine and wouldn’t stop running… how I don’t know

So that was the first full day with not much to show for me and my buddy. That night around the fire looking at pics and listening to everyone else’s
          Kills for the day.

Next morning came early and we woke up early and drove to a property that was about 2 hours away. Got really close to a few cape and they sure are impressive in person; i always thought it was just a mean ol cow seeing them on tv. But in person, my perspective changed and now I wanna shoot one. This property also had a bunch of roan that they bottle fed so they followed you around like a dog

That day was spend chasing some wild *** blesbok that took off as soon as they saw movement it seemed and I almost got a jacked up springbok

Enough typing and now on to the killin

Guess the ph’s saw how much I was beating myself up after losing the wildebeest so they asked if I wanted to shoot a cow. Absolutely. So after a really cool stalk I finally had my first animal on the ground, 300 win mag at 199 and it’s amazing how much they can soak up and don’t wanna die. Call them the poor man’s buffalo for a reason

With the monkey off my back and now I’m in kill mode. Went to breakfast and finally found a beer we were excited to drink and started cruising again and chased the blesbok around and after a couple hours I said can I shoot the screwed up one that’s just standing there. They said sure but it’s a female, say no more she’s gonna die. 250 yard quartering away poke and she folded

This property also had lions and spotted dogs, I knew lions were big but didn’t realize how big those kitties really were until we saw them

That pretty much rounded out the day for us and back to the lodge for more castle lite that we finally got a taste for

              Africa

Next day ended up being my last day of hunting and made my furthest shot ever

New property that we were after a wildebeest for the guy with me. They had some hyena in a pen, bubbles and giggles were their names.

After getting the wildebeest killed and loaded. It was my turn and off we went to a different property for my springbok and Impala

Found a Impala standing under a tree at 400 and the ph said think you can do it? I said I didn’t think I could make those 200 yard shots so let’s try it. Settled the crosshair and squeezed it off and heard the meat pop

He ran 20 yards and stopped. Still standing so I sent another and hit him again but he ran off and laid down. Got back up to him and put another in him, turns out the first 2 hit him on the leg bone and the bullet blew up. First shot was quartering too and hit right on the knuckle, this is also the first time I had a bullet blow up on me and not penetrate

Next and last thing on the list was the springbok and just around the corner from the Impala was a group that decided to stand there a little too long. 315 yard poke and he folded. The coolest and weirdest thing is the bloom after they die and it smells like cotton candy

Can’t believe how beautiful all these critters are and how tough they are and the fact they don’t wanna die

                Africa

We rounded off the trip a couple days early and stayed at the city lodge at the airport. Found a hooters and casino and spent a night there playing blackjack and went to a rugby game

Overall it was a great trip and I can’t wait to go again and it blew all of my expectations

Man that sucks about the WB but with it bleeding from it's nose, the trackers couldn't stay on it to track it down? I've seen trackers stay on a wounded animal for 3 days before finally catching up to it to finish it off.

Do you know what place y'all went to that was 1.7 mil acres? There are discussions on other Africa themed sites about the largest "farms" in SA being around 80,000 acres. I can't remember seeing anything advertised over one million. That would be interesting.

What outfit did you hunt with?

The tracker was on it the whole time. They said we could we could keep chasing him but who knows if he’s ever gonna slow down and y’all have more animals to shoot. I didn’t question

And no sir I don’t, I just know it was a huge place and that’s what the owner told me

                        Kuche safaris
