Bugz and I at the 1,000 mile mark on the trail. The 1,000 mark is in the back country of Yosemite. We were walking through Yosemite for approx 8 days. It’s incredible how remote we were. There were other hikers, but that’s about it.

Coming over Sonora Pass yesterday. Sonora Pass is considered the end of the Sierras (as far as the PCT is concerned). The Pass was amazing. We camped about 1,500 feet below the night before. The hike took us almost to 11,000 feet. I was amazed at the amount of snow still up there (despite “low” snow year). It was windy and even chilly at times… definately not Texas. The snow fields are melting and the water running off is super cold and super pure… no filtering needed. We are still seeing freezing temps at night!

The fly rod stayed packed the last several days. The last 80 miles have been tough and the streams looked only good. I caught many Brook Trout prior to getting to Tuolumme Meadows (in Yosemite). I hope to find more good spots in the next section. This Brook I caught in the outlet of Thousand Island Lakes. I had good luck until the mosquitoes realized I was there. Mosquitoes in the last section have been brutal, another reason for limited fishing at times.

Dorthy Lake - the farthest north Yosemite goes on the PCT. The picture does not do this justice, I was beautiful. The hike leading up to the lake was gradual, but the snow-melt mosquito swarms were tough to contend with.

I'm pretty sure it could make a decent book. Lol. I'll check back in and stay caught up. Thanks again for taking us along with ya'll. Most of us will never have the drive, ability or opportunity to do something like this. Keep at it!

You should check out his other thread when he did the Appalachian Trail. That’s the one that hooked me!

              Keep it up!

I saw you mention, Bugz, seems like a trail name has taken root. I went back to look, did I miss the story on how the name came about? Speaking of, how about your trail name?

                  John Muir Hut

A remarkable hike sent Doug Harnsberger on a quest to make the shelter become a National Historic Landmark.

Bugz was kinda a nickname she picked up prior to the hike. So she brought it to the trail. My trail name is The Dude. I picked it up when I did the AT. While I don’t feel I am worthy of being The Dude, I like the trail name. Good trail names have to be easy to say, not require a ton of explanation and be overall positive. There are some real funny ones out here.

John Muir Hut. It’s an emergency shelter. It was build in 1930. I will post sone interior pictures. No one can answer why this is the only pass with a shelter… we definitely could have used one on Pinchot Oass when it snowed.

We heard there is a fire in Yosemite. We are north of Yosemite now, but a few days ago we could see smoke in distance and smell fire. We knew it was to our south. Just learned yesterday fire us in Yosemite.

Inside the hut. The fireplace was plugged many years ago which is funny because there is no wood to burn within miles. Hikers are not supposed to camp inside hut, but I know many that did. It’s kind of a hiker-trash thing to do. We were there mid-day, so we hiked on down.,

We are resting at a friends place in north Tahoe and will get back in the PCT at Truckee. There may be a side trip to the Truckee River tommorow for trout.

While I am sitting here, I am not going to be back in texas until after Labor Day. I will be looking to unload tix for Robert Earl Keen (sept 3 and 4)… his last two shows (Floores). Shoot me a Pm if interested. I will put these on the classified section if no one sees them here first.

Big up date. After several days of resting in north Tahoe, we got back on the trail at Donner Pass and made the 42 mile hike to Sierra City. The trail was not overly tough and my right foot now feels great. Most hikers, including us, have decided to avoid the 150+ mikes of scorched earth (Dixie Fire last year). So ti get around it, we hitched out of Sierra City to Sierra Ville and then hitched back to Truckee. We are going to do a small road trip with other hikers today. Problem is no cars were available in Truckee so we hitched to Reno. I believe we hitched 76 miles yesterday (three different hitches). We went from a cool small town (Sierra City) on the Yuba River to the GSR casino in Reno. We are about to head north above the burn now.

This is still so amazing to me. I just put it on a list that I also just made of adventures/trips to try to make with my family one day, or maybe one or two kids/my wife. You have done an excellent job with it here. Be safe.
