Default S.h.n.f. 2019-2020

Since I'm not very computer savvy, let's try this again with the proper title...

S.H.N.F Hunters, lets hear it. How was last season, how is this season looking? I personally didn't hunt last year, new job, new house and all. Looking forward to getting out there and slinging a stick or two at something myself. haven't done much scouting yet with all the rain, but I plan on getting out there this weekend and checking some cameras I put out earlier this year. Good luck to all, and stay safe out there.

Lets hear it...

Just scouted my new spot I hunted once last year. That one hunt produced a doe and three pigs within 20 mins. Could’ve filled tag #5 on a 9” spike that same morning but passed cuz I always leave my last tag for big boy.....which I never see. Lol. Anyway, seen 2 deer at that spot the other day and left. Won’t be back till opening day. That place is hot. Leaving it alone.

I remember that, you lit em up that day. I set cams out and apparently the batteries (brand new) were no good and died 2 days in. Had to get em and put more new batteries in to set out and survey my spots. Found a couple oaks that look to be productive, but more time will give me some more insight.

Scouted today for 6 hours, jumped a bachelor group 30 yards from the tree I hang my bowstand on, 2 of them looked BIG. Saw 6 does. Found some new promising spots, and was able to score my first pistol kill. 15 yard broadside shot with my 9mm. It was a very successful day!

Nice going Swine! And you’re right, one GW will tell you one thing while another tells you something different. We’ve talked about this for years on this site and I’ll continue to wear orange every hunt as well.

Nice! I was talking to some co-workers last week and they were down playing the 9mm effectiveness - I own one and really enjoy it. Glad you were able to slam one down - I was out there today scouting and it was brutally hot - offensively hot haha

I wouldnít second guess the he effectiveness fit a second. Full pass through at 15 yards. Pig made it about 2 feet before collapsing

Last I checked he is gonna be hunting the Davy this year. Bigger deer, less pressure. From all the spouting off of hunting spots on the shnf group page I'm thinkin he made a good call.

Put in 10.5 miles Saturday. Found some pretty oak flats but not much sign. Spooked 1 deer off bed in a clear cut and had 1 blowing at us near a pond.

Sundays 6 miles lead us to the archery only area near Cagle. Holy crap, that **** is terrible. Nothing like wading through waist deep weeds and bushes in wide open woods. Almost as bad as the palemtto thickets at north end of Lake Conroe.

I'm anxious too - only problem is trying to get time off from work and school. BTW, how many of you all use a climber vs hang-on? Just asking since I just tried my new Summit Viper SD climber - didn't feel as comfortable or stable as hang-on (I have the cheap Game Winner from Academy and the GW steps).

I use a millennium, M7 clamp on with a set of the Muddy Pro sticks. I have used both but prefer the rock solid feel of the clamp on vs the climber.

Tree options are greatly increased for my lonewolf lock on and climbing sticks, but my viper climber is much more comfortable.

I grew up as an "all day" hunter. Walk in before daylight and out after daylight.

On the viper, once setup, I'll run a strap around the tree for bottom and top. This will increase the solid feel and make more stable. I also use a rope attached top and bottom, this is in case the bottom slips it doesn't get out of reach.

I dont like being in a tree. Try to use a natural blind on the ground during archery. Wouldn't dare do it during rifle season though.

This weekend I got the bright idea to go check out my spot that's perfect, nice and open edge habitat....in winter.

It's currently under about 6 feet of beautyberry bush... good thing I went now instead of trying to dig through that at 5am opening morning!

Angelina NF Plan B it is! Lol

On a side note just curious - what time do y'all usually get to the trailhead? I usually try to be ready to go on the trailhead by around 4am (don't know if that's overkill)

I usually aim to get to the trailhead at a time that puts me up in the tree at least a half hour before shooting light. Lets the woods settle down. On a side note, anybody see any white oaks producing this year other than water/pin oak? I have been moseying around and not seen any with much of a crop. Most of the acorns I've seen have been stacked heavy in the reds.

Only acorns I have seen on the dirt are unripe ones knocked out by the storms.

I've seen a few of the white oaks (the pin oaks I referred to) start to drop. They'll probably ramp up in the next week and a half or two weeks if I had to guess. The reds though, correct me if I'm wrong but they don't drop till a little later, like mid Oct.

Want to follow this one too

Iíll be hunting the Sam for my first time this year. Been 20+ yrs since Iíve tried public. Have some spots to check out hopefully after this rain stops. Kinda neutralized the spots I was planning to search for water though. I probably wonít hunt until late archery season, probably not at all in November then later December when most go back inside. Plan to see if I can get away from the crowd. Aim small

Yeah I've never referred to white oaks as pin oaks, so there may be a disconnect there. The water oaks and white oaks drop around the same time for us usually and thats followed by the red oaks (my "pin" oaks lol) and post oaks

Honestly it's kinda funny. We didn't get a ton of rain, maybe 3 inches. Who knows, maybe we will get more today or tomorrow.

The only section of woods that received much rain at all is the areas near cleveland and shepherd.
