Thumbs up South Pacific Arrow Slingin - New Zealand

More great memories for Team Landrover! Sorry about the delay on posting but when we got home I had to head to Oakland for my uncles funeral. The last 20 days have been nearly a blurr.
New Zealand was not on the "super short" list for bowhunting spots but the opportunity leaped frogged to the starting position over the last 18 months......odd how LIFE can dictate your next move! This adventure hunt with Alpine Hunting (https://www.alpinehunting.com/) was a live auction donation item for our Houston SCI Chapter event. 100% donation nonetheless!!! My goal was to bid on it as I had enjoyed hunting in Alaska the year before with Liam Quinn, the son of the owner of Alpine Hunting. After scanning the room after about 5 bids I noticed my buddy Skeeter (yes the one on TBH) was also bidding. Heck, my wife had already bought two other trips so this worked out pretty well for me. The auctioneer gavel smashes the lectern and Skeeter won the bid! Fast forward a few months and Hurricane Harvey changes everything for nearly everyone along the coast. Dan had to change his travel plans to Africa so he twisted my arm on this South Pacific adventure....sorta.
I will try to post up in sections as we were on the move for 13 days or so. The scenery is just as beautiful as everyone says and the previous NZ threads on TBH were spot on. Our first 4 days were hanging out in Auckland, NZ doing all the touristy stuff that my girls love. Lets see if pics can tell most of the story, if I can get them to load:

Next stop was Palmerston North and then a 2+ hour drive to the lodge. The prop plane flight was about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Auckland. Liam had been waiting for us to arrive since 9 am but we were delayed until about 5 pm due to mechanical issues. Did not get to hunt as the day was spent in the Auckland airport in the Alliance Lounge people watching and wishing I had rented a car. .....lol. I did watch alot of rugby and world cup soccer as we ate & drank the day away!

After loosing a half day of hunting I was ready! The next morning the chef had breakfast on the table and I was out the door to sling some practice arrows. My Obsession Knightmare was ready and so was I. The terrain was up and down and I was happy to be on their CanAm side by side .......then it was time to spot & stalk! Let me just say, I was having flashbacks to Spain and Alaska!!! It did not take long to realize that getting within 70 yards was gonna be ........ROUGH!!! We definitely got close on a monster stag or two but at the moment of truth the swirling wind did us in. Plan B was discussed and agreed upon.....time for a blind......if nothing else to give my achy legs and joints a break....lol.

Plan B was the ticket!!! Beautiful Red Stag shows on the horizon and decides to come in. Upon further inspection he was just what the doctor ordered for a trigger happy Creole......thwack......650 grain Grizzly Stik with a Silver Flame headed for the lungs. 32 yards, a little bit high but it ended well!!!

Next up was another spot & stalk opportunity on an animal that qualified for the South Pacific slam for archers. He was in a location that we could drop over the top and work down........perfect for me!! The idea worked so well that we came over the top at only 39 yards away. We then proceeded to sneak to 25 yards.....where I promptly shot under him. The wind was blowing like gang-busters so he startled toward us for a perfect 20 yard shot. The bearded beast (Feral Goat) ran for about 40 yards into some incredibly thick stuff and piled up. I was glad Liam was there as I would have walked right past him.

After crawling around mountains they call hills I was ready for a blind the following day. Either Fallow or Sika.....or possibly Russ were on the hit list. Shortly after settling in .......thwack!!!
I had passed on fallow in Spain and France but this one wanted to meet his maker.....I obliged!!!

Thumbs up

Sorry about the delay guys. My trip to the kennel got changed to a milk run to "Pasa-get-down-dena" then a stop to check on a few business things and all of a sudden a trip to the Aldine area. Let me get back at it!

Before we headed to the south island I decided to go after a Sika Deer. Talk about becoming my nemesis. We saw a ton of them but they kept sounding the alert.
Finally a 36 yard shot presented itself. I took the shot and was highly confident in the arrow placenent. Especially when the Sika laid down. .....still in eye sight!!!!! 10 minutes later it walked off.....unbelievable!!! We searched for hours, it was gut wrenching playing it over in my head and the recovery wait made for a very long night. The next morning we scowered that area on foot.....zero luck. After lunch we headed to a new area to try again. Guess who shows up shuffling akong with a few others within 15 minutes. Blood on his cape and a hole all the way thru his upper/forward shoulder. Talk about "mana from heaven!!!" Yep, the bowhunting God's were in camp with me. 4 animals down, what are the chances my grand fortune would hold as we geared up for the 3 hour flight to the southern alps?

This is all your fault Danno!!!! (-;

The next morning found us driving 1.5 hours to a grass landing strip to meet our Cessna pilot for our trip to the south island. As he landed the sheep scattered like chickens. The weather was perfect but I knew it would be much colder in the Alps.

Upon arrival some 3+ hours later we checked into a little motel in Fox Glacier! Fox Glacier is a small resort town that folks visit to see this glacier, sky dive and do other touristy stuff. This time of the year it is about hunting......the place was empty. Since my girls had zero interest in Cessna flights nor helicopters we were hoping to get "in and out" within the 3 days left on the trip.

90 minutes after arriving the helicopter was ready to head into the southern alps. They explained how difficult this would be for a bowhunter and if I wanted to geaux with the gun they had it on the helicopter. Being the annoying optimist I voted to stick with my bow. Blissful ignorance was all I had in my favor....lol.
Two hours of helicopter pirouettes we saw lots of tahr and chamois but none in a position for a flat-lander with a hard head. Heck, we had to geaux back to Fox Glacier for more fuel after all that sky ballet.
Once back in the air we saw a nice group with two nice bulls! No idea if they would play along but next thing I know Liam and I are standing in 3 feet of snow.......waiting & hoping.......and trembling from cold or excitement after jumping out of a helicopter. Well as you would know we picked the correct drain but the lot of them are running towards us. One stops on my opposite side and I sling an arrow. Total miss!!! Arrow shatters on rocks as sparks fly. Liam says nock another arrow as more are coming down the drain. This time I have zero idea what to expect but I learned a 25 yard shot at a running tahr means another shattered arrow. ...lol. Helicopter comes back, snow is flying everywhere, I feel dejected but the theme song from "Apocalypse Now" is stuck in my head!!!!

So now I know how the game is played! I also know I can't hit a running critter like Marty or Bisch......LMAO.
We search for a bull tahr and hopefully he is solo....these $100 arrows exploding on rocks ain't a good feeling. 45 minutes later we spot a beast. He may be in a good position if we can be dropped off quickly. Did I say quickly. ......we were dumped out my left leg went straight down into the snow and Liam had to take my bow and drag me out so we could find a setup spot. 5 minutes later Liam spots a single bull sneaking down the drain towards me. He tells me to nock an arrow. I see nada but follow his lead. We have a 52 yard shot marked out on a curve in the creek. The single tahr sneaks pass that spot and stops in the 45 yard area but giving no shot. 5 or 10......or maybe 15 minutes pass with zero movement from the beast. We literally look at eachother simultaneously as it was time to move towards him. We crawled in the snow a little ways and spot him. Liam says 44 yards. .....I draw and release......double lung! He lurches forward and the chase for Tahr was over. Apocalypse Now theme song is now our fight song as we head back for the day with handshakes all around.

Did I say headed back in????? Well, with a little over one hour till dark that was the plan. ......then chase the chamois in the morning. Nope.....they obviously spot a chamois. .......but don't tell me. Next thing we are headed down and Liam says ,"are you ready?" I say for what? He says we are going to try for a chamois. Oh crap, I did not replace the last arrow I had taken from my quiver. After a mad scramble we jump out and I have no idea how this is going to geaux down. Liam picked a spot but we were exposed to any wild eyes. We tried moving down but water was flowing beneath the snow. We moved forward quickly. ......and the snow got deeper. Then my left leg goes all the way down. No pulling me outta this predicament as the critter is spotted. I lean to the side to lower my profile. Liam pics a spot and whispers 25 yards......now hopefully he stops in that general area . With my total leg incased in snow and kneeling on the other knee this could get interesting. We both spot him at 25 yards as I draw, but he trots pass that marker. I remain drawn as,we don't know where he went. He pops up at 15 yards, chest forward and I release for a heart shot!!! He spins around and I see blood on the snow as he tumbles into the creek. Whew....... two perfect arrows in the southern Alps in 40 minutes. ........talk about a rush!!!
