Figured I'd start a new thread for the upcoming season. I went a few times in February to walk around and see what was going on, but I haven't been back since. This season is going to be more of a "watch and learn" type deal for me anyways. When I get tired of looking at the same trees on private land I'll go stretch my legs and look at different trees at Somerville

Went yesterday with my Dad to see what everything looked like "growed up". Weeds were anywhere from knee to armpit high. It was drier out there than I would have expected though.

I'm glad ya'll started this thread. I'm going to do my darnedest to get on some public land and hunt this year. Correct me if I've read this wrong but I think need an LPU permit to scout out there as I didn't get the APH last year and don't want to spend $48 on one that's only good until the end of August.

Anyone know if the water is down enough for the roads through nails Creek to not be flooded?

Pulled camera this weekend and had plenty of action. Tons of Does, small bucks, and pigs. No big shooters yet but ive only had the camera out about a week. At least its a target rich enviroment with all the free bacon walking about

I had a gentleman walk by one of my cameras this past Saturday and immediately I thought there goes my camera. (I forgot my lock.) Well my camera is still there and working fine. Not sure if he saw it or not but I just wanted to apologize for doubting the gentleman. Thank you for being a respectful hunter. After my buddy's tree stand was stolen two days after putting it out last season, you just can't help but think the worst. So if that was you, I just wanted to say thank you.

Am I the only one that is terrified when stepping onto a tree stand? That first step onto the stand is like having your life flash right before your eyes. If it goes, you go. I will definitely be wearing a harness but I have to figure the darn thing out first. What measures do you all take to ensure that your tree stand is safe?

Your harness has a loop at the top that goes to your safety strap. The safety strap (this has another name but for the life of me I at a loss) circles the tree above your head. This should be connected to you before you remove your lineman's belt. Then remove the lineman's belt and step into the tree stand. You also have w recovery strap to take weight off your harness if you fall. This is important as if you fall from the stand and hang from the harness too long you can cause serious medical problems. Watch the videos on YouTube. At no point when you leave the ground should you not be connected to the tree. I use a lineman's belt while climbing as it allows hands free to install the stand. Good luck.

My wife and I were out for opening weekend. Drastic change from last year. Everything was flooded in 2018 and dry as a bone this year. Everywhere that isn't trees is ragweed. Some deer and hogs on cams, very little in daylight hours and nothing seen during the trip. Unseasonably hot weather, hopefully it will get better soon.

I hunted Saturday and Sunday. Saw hogs and spooked some deer but didn't see anything while sitting. You can hear animals all over the place but the ragweed is so tall and thick you can't see them. The ragweed is finally starting to burn up from the ground up so hopefully soon it will die and lay down. There's a lot of hogs and I actually think it's affecting the deer at this point.

Was out this morning. Started out nice, but got warm fast. Didn't see anything, but did get a warning call when going deeper to check a camera. Come on cold front!!!

New to this forum, but was out yesterday morning while it was in the 50’s and 60’s and saw 15 deer before I left around 1:00. Some smaller bucks but mostly does. The unit is very dry compared to last year. No water to be found while I was out there. Going to be out there again this weekend with the cooler weather coming in.

I Lived in central Texas all my life, moved to Abilene this year, and moving back home in 2 years. I was wondering what the deer size and population is like. I’ve seen some pics on the older thread thread that seems like the bigger deer are on the small side. I’m down to hunt anything and look forWard to hunting Somerville when I get back.
Y’all have any pics of deer taken here? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Went in at Station 4 today. Saw a few deer before 9:30 but nothing after that. Came out around 1:30 and most everyone was gone. The hogs outnumbered the deer today. Better luck next time.

After 3 sits, I have nothing to show for it. And things progressively have been getting worse. Today I didn't see a single thing in 3 different spots where deer were showing up consistantly before. I'm taking a break from this BS.

I haven’t been out there this year and didn’t make it out all season last year. I’m ready to get back out and do some public land hunting. Hopefully it’s nice and cool this weekend.

Just finished a 5 hour sit with no action. I thought the cold weather would have the deer up and moving but I was wrong. I did see a guy with a rifle. I flashed some orange his way and he turned and walked the other way. When I came out there was only one other truck with a lot of archery gear so I am guessing that guy took off.

Been hunting this area for a long time and never came across anyone. Never on camera or ran into anyone during the season. I'm out here pretty regularly and today I stumbled upon this. With all the trees they cut down maybe that's why the traffic around here has slowed.

this may sound funny but I've been out 5 times last couple months lookin for pigs, havent seen 1. Seen a lot of deer. I've mostly been to Nails, Yegua once. Last spring before and after the flood they were everywhere. Is anyone else seeing the same or am I just having bad luck. Wondering if landowners knocked the numbers down during the flood when it pushed them up on dryer ground
