I'd go for drawn doe tags for general season. I didn't shoot a doe during archery even though I had a 7 yard opportunity. The two yearlings with her helped me decide. If that had been a couple months later I would have probably felt differently.

Love this! Would lower the hunting pressure a ton as well!

Sure wish they would do this on lake Waco too, actually can't believe they haven't yet.

Yah, who needs guns of any type anyway? It's just one more for the anti groups.

The fish are biting. And there's hogs to be kilt. Gotta go!

I don’t know what area this stone is in. It’s north of Blackcreek Lake just across the fence. I just noticed he was a Mason.

I believe that one is just after you leave 47 and move into the south end of 31. There are several grave stone scattered throughout the grasslands.

There's another lone gravestone in Unit 4. There's also a small graveyard that's hard to find behind Rhodes Lake. We helped install the historical marker about 15 years ago.

I had forgot about that one. Makes you wonder how many folks are buried out there? Lots of old home places that were settled soon after the Civil War.

That’s the headstone off of CR 2560, just north of cottonwood lake. It’s a lot easier to see now that they mulched that area last summer.

I had questions about the upcoming Turkey season at LBJ Grasslands. Any help would be much appreciated. Iíve done some research but just want to be 100% compliant.

1. Do you follow the county regulations in regards to the season dates and bag limit? So it would be March 30 to May 12?

2. I donít see any extra fees for hunting, camping, or entrance (other than Texas hunting license and public hunting permit which I already have). Just making sure.

3. Looks like 2 camping areas, any recommendations Black Creek Lake versus TADRA point for tent camping?

4. Is it safe to use hen decoys there or best not to use decoys at all?

Any other information would be much appreciated.Thank you

1: County bag limits and dates.

2: Just need license and upland game bird endorsement. No APH needed for LBJ nut is needed if going to Caddo.

3: Fee areas at black creek lake, tadra point, and valley view camp areas. You can camp anywhere else without fees.

4: Use caution as always with decoys but still able to be safely used.

Good luck and have fun. Have seen turkeys but never come across them on public land. They have a very good sense of where to be to not get shot. I will probably be out there a bit this season as well. Probably going to hit up Caddo in search of Easterns as well this season.

This is confusing but according to this document you do need an APH permit for all Forest Service Lands. Please correct me if needed

What kind of licenses do I need to hunt on Forest
Service land?
Texas Hunting License on General Forestland and
Texas Hunting License and Annual PublicHunting
Permit(also referred to asĎType IIí permit) on
WMAs, with the appropriate endorsements;
archery, migratory bird, etc.

All you need on the LBJ is your Texas Hunting License with a turkey stamp. The LBJ Grasslands is not a WMA.

Caddo is a WMA leased by TPWD from the forest service and required the AOH which is why it is in the book. LBJ is overseen entirely by USFS and is not apart of the APH. Maps can be found online but best way to get info is by stopping at the office in Decatur.

Just a comment. I love bowhunting, but I also like to hunt deer, turkey, and small game with my flintlock rifles. To those that would want to make LBJ archery and shotgun only, why would you want to take this away from me?

I haven't heard of anyone against you using black powder guns on the grasslands but are still fine with shotguns being used. If anything there are some that would want it to be bow only. I know some have argued the bow only thing with the grasslands mostly being smaller units but I just don't see it happening. The only reasons I could see bow only happening is to reduce pressure on the deer a little and be a little bit safer. I am not against it but also don't think I would push for it either as it would reduce public access for other hunters. There is already to few public places to hunt in this state so I don't care for reducing that number more unless absolutely needed.

I wish they would go back to doe tags. The current system leads to overcrowding, plus most people with family, do not hunt on Thanksgiving day.
Another question about Red Deer archery range. Years ago, you used to be able to drive into that unit. Also, years ago, I took my bow there, had to walk in, and saw no range.
I have been hunting LBJ since the late 1970's, seen a lot of good and bad over this time.

I've felt the same way every since USFS did away with the draw doe tags. And I predicted the very thing you stated. There is a lot more to the down side of that as well.

This is just one: With the draw, at least they had an idea of "not more than" number of does being killed (unless poached). Now, there is only estimates based on what they see in some of the camps, and at some gates.

I wish they would go back to the draw as well. The crowds during thanksgiving weekend has to be bad for the wildlife not to mention unsafe. I went out thanksgiving morning and went home after seeing 8 people parked on an 80 acre unit that doesn't have a ton of cover. The archery range hasn't been around in quite some time. I believe they had issues with vandalism. That isn't surprising as it is pretty much the same reason the clay range got shutdown.

Just like you would turkey hunt anywhere else. Find some birds, call one in and let it rip. There are units all over with birds that stay there, or pass through on a very regular basis.

There will be a lot more people to contend with than on a private place, but success is always possible. IMO! Call less, and move more. I have seen no less than 5 people trying to work one bird with varying levels of calling skill. The bird knew none of those sounds were ones he was interested in, no just kept moving.

Good luck out there, and stay safe. Turkey season is usually the one that has a higher amount of hunting accidents caused by not identifying targets before shooting.

Assuming the ones that were posted on the LBJ deer hunters facebook group? Some nice looking sheds. Good luck tracking them down for next season.

About 70 miles, it's not bad now that they have I35 finished through Fort Worth. 330 is a long drive.
