    Antler Restoration

I had my elk that I shot last year European mounted, when I got it back the antlers were messed up, they had been “cleaned” with something that left them much lighter and splotchy.

This is what it looked like before I dropped it off.

I did some research and found that you can darken them with denatured alcohol and potassium permanganate.

It took about 10-12 coats before they got to a color I was happy with.

Here is the skull mounted on the wall in the house.

Wonder why they wiped all the tar off of them? That's the part that really honors the animal...he worked hard for that color.

            Your fix looks real good.

I agree, I was shocked when I got them back.

You did a great job. I've never used that method but instead just rub them like the animal does with pine tar and branches and dirt.
I bet he pressure washed it.

                    Nice job
I've found that using blood gets them dark again..after all it's what gives it the brown color in first place

                      Can you explain the process?

1/4 oz of the potassium permanganate dissolved in a quart of the denatured alcohol, then just paint it on each antler. Wait about 10 minutes between each coat. When they get to the desired darkness then just use some fine steel wool and polish the tips to get them ivory again. Mine needed about 10-12 coats.
