    Smile!!!!!!

    Why do we smile for pictures? If you look at early photos. Most didn't smile.

    I am beautiful. My face is the prettiest thing I've ever seen. Why do I need to church it up???

    Where did yelling SMILE come from? Most of us should agree. That the actual moment of taking casual or professional pictures, is near bottom of the list of "Fun"...

      And when did the word Cheese, mean smile ?
      I like the old stern look from dated pics.
      Life and people were serious back then.

          I seem to recall hearing that pictures back in the 1800's taking much longer to "expose". It was easier to hold a pose without smiling. I guess we could always ask Burnadell to be certain.

            This is correct and yes he can confirm as his name is on the patent.

                Smiling makes everyone wonder what you have been up to.

                  Kids were taught to say “cheese” because they make a smile with their face when they are saying the word.

                  I know of a couple blind men that say “29” before their picture is taken. It makes for a good smiling picture

                  I know you just did the 29 thing to see what your mouth does when you say it.

                    We have a bunch of those in our farm house. Everyone looks so miserable! Like nobody was enjoying life.

                      Well it was common practice in early photos to put dead folks in those pictures also. People are and always have been freakin weird. Why do we do anything that we humans do? Who actually thought, "people will care about this moment. Lets freeze it in time." Because in most cases whether smiling or not, the only picture of another person that I really care to see is a beautiful naked or close to naked woman. Other than that.....nah.

                      It's kind of a pointless concept. In 100 years most likely nobody is going to look at a picture of me and think "Man that guy was really something." That's why very few pictures of me actually exist. It's gonna be a short slide show at my funeral.

                      I understand smiling in pictures more than I do when people do the duck lips thing or stand in front of the mirror. People just don't have enough to do now days.

                          We Wear the Mask

                          BY PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR

                          We wear the mask that grins and lies,
                          It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
                          This debt we pay to human guile;
                          With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
                          And mouth with myriad subtleties.

                          Why should the world be over-wise,
                          In counting all our tears and sighs?
                          Nay, let them only see us, while
                          We wear the mask.

                          We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
                          To thee from tortured souls arise.
                          We sing, but oh the clay is vile
                          Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
                          But let the world dream otherwise,
                          We wear the mask!
