Whip or will. Not a hawk. Night Hawk.

I have found them before on the ground. Who know why they ground themselves. Most of the ones that I have seen fly off after a while.

Not sure what a Whippoorwill looks like some I'm going to go for (young) hawk. I see these in my backyard all the time. Flying through the trees, not down on the ground.

It's a whippoorwill, this time of the year, they are nesting, they make nests on the ground.

                        It’s probably a cousin of the whippoorwill, a chuck-will's-widow.

^Yes. Chuck-will’s-widow are much more common in Texas. Very neat bird with a mesmerizing call. Check out the difference between its call and the whip-poor-will’s on YouTube.

I'd say juvenile, at least. Maybe first time off the nest??

Most likely a Chuck Wills Widow, but could be a Whippoorwill. They are very similar in appearance and their call is one of the main ways to tell them apart.

You are lucky to see one. They are nocturnal, highly camouflaged, and very elusive. They are also declining in their range
