Default Arlington Firefighter killed in Cancun at resort

Im sure you have all seen the headlines. Its a sad deal.

Obviously the government down there wants to keep it as low key as possible and is not releasing any details. Wont even release the resort that it happened at.

Initially said that he drowned but a lawyer hired by the family obtained photos showing evidence of beating and possible suffocation.

A group of us (also FF) are leaving to go there monday. Ive never been uncomfortable in the half dozen trips weve taken down there but im a little uneasy after this.

I don’t understand why Americans keep going to places like that. There are so many places here to see, I just don’t get it.

Because it’s a beautiful place and a fun vacation nearby. You can’t see that beach and water here.

It’s no more dangerous than any major city in the USA

Not to be rude, but was he targeted or something because he was a firefighter? I highly doubt it, so not sure why it would make you feel uncomfortable cuz you’re a FF?

I don’t know any of the details regarding it, but I’m just saying I worked as a medic/FF since 09 and I know many of my buddies that would definitely get themselves into trouble no matter where they go.

Lynn. I just spent a few weeks at Isla Mujeres. I understand people with 27 years working the street. I feel good enough there that my wife goes shopping by herself and to the beach etc. Houston, Dallas, New Orleans negative- I go with her and just watch as I dont go shopping etc.

I went to Cancun this spring and it was awesome and I felt more safe there than lots of other places. Also Troy Aikman and the senior class from Dallas Episcopal was there at the same resort. If Cancun was such a rough place do you think that crowd would go there??

My guess is the most likely scenario is this guy was into something shady.

Since they started dumping mutilated bodies on the road and hanging them from bridges I decided we won’t be going back any time soon. I have really enjoyed the 3 trips we made down there but it’s not worth the risk

We got at least once a year to cancun not to mention MichoacŠn and Guadalajara we love going there never feel unsafe other than the market area but that’s because of pick pocketers other than that not never had had any confrontations or anytime we have felt the need to leave a certain area because of shady stuff, unfortunate things happen every where it’s just a matter of who it happens too and what the media will publicize it as

We went a month ago, took my 5 year old. It was our first time in Cancun, never felt unsafe at all. We went and walked around the hotel zone, no issues at all. My question is why did his wife let him stay at the bar by himself on their first night on their 10th anniversary? My wife would have hung my *** if I tried to pull that.

Good friend of mine (Forney Fireman) just got back from Cancun. Said it was the worst crap hole he’d been to in a long time. Never going back. He was there two weeks ago. Hated it obviously but this is all prior to hearing this.

I agree with you. Something seems fishy with this story and I would be investigating her first.

I was at Playa Mujeras a couple of weeks ago and never felt unsafe. Yes, the city of Cancun is shady but no worse than some parts of Dallas.

The one trip Iíve made to Mexico was just meh at best.

The worst city in America is better than some of the crap hole places we drove through getting to our resort.

And at least I America if something did happen to you youíre much better off than being in some 3rd world country with corrupt government and military.

Hate to hear about the firefighter. Prayers for his family.

Ive never been a fan of CanCun. It is a large city with big city problems. I prefer smaller communities and slower life. Isla kinda closes about 1030 or 11 pm and does not open until after 8.

Feel bad for this man’s friends and family as getting any closure or answers will probably be very difficult.

We were in Maroma Beach, between Cancun and Playa, in April. Beautiful resort. Great service. Great accommodations. Great experience. Me, my wife and 17 year old twin girls. I never felt unsafe. The Mexican Caribbean is a great place to visit and probably safer than downtown Austin.

It wasn't bad in 1978.

We took a family vacation to Cancun/Cozumel/Akumal. Akumal was just grass huts, part time electricity and only accessible by sea. Scuba diving was awesome.

There is one major difference between being in a big city in the US and being in a foreign country. That difference is on my hip. Y’all go and have fun, I’ll just stick around within the US borders.

My favorite place ever. Felt safe the whole time. Golf carts and beaches, awesome dinners and fun shopping. Go back tomorrow. All the people we met at the condos were owners a few from texas. Great place to take the kids. Private shuttle to ferry and golf cart to condo. Wife loves it as well. Cozumel no mas, PV no mas, Cancun no mas!

Heading to all inclusive Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya on Friday. No need for us to leave the resort at all. Have absolutely no reservations. Hate what happened to the firefighter. Unfortunately sometimes, bad decisions result in tragic endings and this seems to be the case.

I would be curious to see the annual murder rate in Cancun up against Chicago, Los Angelos, New Orleans. I looked...but couldn't find it.

You won't find an accurate rate for Cancun or any other resort town in Mexico or they would lose tourist and cruise port business. I will venture that its much lower than Chicago, New Orleans and LA though

Me and the wife goes to Cancun once maybe twice a year. She loves the place. In my opinion it’s as unsafe as you want it to be.
