Well we got her to solid ground, but I think she’s too far gone. Couldn’t get her to stand. Guess we did what we could.

I’m going to go check on her tomorrow. Maybe bring some hay down if she’s still alive. It sucks we really tried, but she’s so weak. She must have been there for several days.

My dad and I ran across the same thing when I was probably 12 or 13 while fishing along a creek. We dug around it and tried to rock it side to side till the suction gave. It finally got up the strength to stand enough and get out, but couldn't just get up on all fours and move right away. We went into town to get some hay and by the time we got back it was already gone. Hope that's the case for this one.

I am new to Texas and hog hunting and have been to Granger four times with no luck. I hunted both sides of the parking lot at the kayak launch at Gate #7 and Willis Creek. I have come to three conclusions 1) there are no hogs in the area and 2) if armadillos tasted like venison I would have tagged out and 3) they need to open the area to general bowhunting for deer instead of a draw. I have seen more deer in a two hour trek than I saw in Michigan in a whole season. And a couple of them were really nice bucks.

Any advise on finding the hogs at Granger this time of year?

Dude it took me a year of hunting there multiple times a week before I killed a pig. Lots of guys swear by consistently baiting an area near thick cover and sitting in a blind nearby. Sunset to last light is your best chance. I just find it a bit boring. After deer season wraps up I'll be out there a bunch, at least until it greens up. I'm no expert hog hunter but I'd be happy to keep you company while bushwhacking around.

Btw, brace yourself for some razzing and misinformation on this thread. The granger veterans like to give newbs a hard time. It's all in good fun though.

Cool

Hunting hogs at Granger has allot to do about wearing out boots and being in right place at right time. Couple guys pushing some thick stuff with a posted hunter on the exit route works too. Three is a good number. During the February Granger Ranger Xtreme Hunt there is usually a bunch of fellas driving pigs and more likely to have one run in front of you. Worked for me, see avatar.

Well y’all peaked my interest, unfortunately she didn’t make it.

This is how I found her.

We got her from that hole to dry ground.

She never moved from that spot.

Thanks for the advise Deaf. I make take you up on the offer. I just can't see how so many guys talk about the hog problem in the area and yet they are so hard to find. They should be talking about the deer problem! LOL.

Granger has lots of hogs. They just tend to be where people aren't... Cover 10 mile out there stomping on every thick brush pile and you'll see them. The trick is seeing them before they're running. When I started hunting out there I moved fast, and covered a lot of ground, saw lots of hogs too, but had nothing remotely close to a shot. I slowed down and saw fewer pigs, but have more shot opportunities now.

That's how I learned too. Move far and fast at first. Once you figure out the type of stuff they like slow way down and concentrate your efforts on the best areas

I am well on my way to earning my boot on the ground time, i must just be looking in the wrong places. i went through some thick god awful areas on Thursday and no hog sign or hogs. However saw a couple really nice bucks and I have yet to see another hunter in the woods, although i see their vehicles and sometimes their stands. I will keep at it as long as my time allows.

I promise I'm not saying this as a joke, but try Sore Finger. It's a long walk. They aren't always in there. But sometimes they're all over that place.

Thanks for the update. Guess if I got off my butt I could have checked myself since I am only 15 minutes away. Found one last year that was already gone and developing quite the smell.

There’s a blind about 30 yards from where she got stuck. I feel bad for that hunter. It’s going to be ripe here shortly. Maybe they’ll get a shot at a yote.

I went out to Sore Finger today. I had a good time, but didn't see any hogs. A few tracks but no hogs or even droppings. It should be called "Sore Feet", Trumpkin wasn't kidding about the walk. I can see why the hogs would like that area. Pretty thick around the lake and most people would not make the hike. It is better reached by boat than foot. I saw a lot less trash than in the other areas I tried. I also watched a 145+ inch buck at 75 yards in an open areas along the lake moving does. But once again no hogs.

Think of it this way, now you can cross that area off for a month or two. Sorry it didn't get you into piggies, but that's how Granger goes.

Is there a gate or parking area North of Sore Finger? Off FM971? Looks like approximately 1/2 mile kayak ride from Friendship park.

Most people park in the ditch or underneath the bridge right by where the lake extends out under 971. There is a gate there.

I parked at the parking lot and gate at the end of CR 358 I think it was. Trust me take the kayak route. It is a really long walk to the lake.

No problem. It is called hunting, not shopping. And like I said, I had a good time out stretching my legs and seeing all the new terrain and wildlife.

Thanks, I may do a recon of the parking (over land route) and also the kayak route from Friendship park. That would make getting a hog back to truck smoother I'm thinking.

Anybody ever check out this piece of sore finger? One of the few spots at granger I've never explored. Doesn't seem like much cover but also doesn't seem like much pressure. Might be worth a poke?

Excellent idea. Maybe worth a kayak trip down the stream if it holds water.

This was my first year hunting there but, the waterline looks pretty far from where there was mud. And some areas that had mud are dry as a bone.

Access to water will be key to finding hogs then. Some of the normally flooded flats my be good stalking areas now.

Finally some success, well sort of. Found where hogs were rooting around in the woods and I finally saw a hog. I was way deep in Pecan Grove walking the edge of a dry creek bed and I hear a grunt and a hog comes out the bottom and starts looking around like he wanted a fight. He was about 20 yards away but I couldn't get a shot through the brush. I tried to move around for a clear shot and he went another 10 yards and stopped but still no shot. I tried to keep up with him but lost him in the brush. But very exciting! Next step is dropping the string on one.

Keep at it! You'll succeed, and the feeling of pride in hauling a big ol bow killed hog out of Granger is like no other.

Tuesday morn. Cold. maybe drizzle. Day moon. Maybe Walk a few miles. (as long as not getting wet). Will report if anything to share. I spotted a few blinds assumed belonging to lucky to be drawn deer hunters. Will steer clear of course but some are crafty and hard to spot. I need to get out so will watch and detour best possible. Hope not many out on a Tuesday.

Saw zero people. Zero pig. Many Deer. Mist turned to light rain 10:30. Lake is low which gave easy access to some areas I never venture. Little sign but some. Walked Gate 6 east a mile or so and than west almost to Gate 7 return to 6 making a crazy 8. Roughly 3 hours steady moderate walk so saw a lot of area. Was tempted to broad head a squirrel.

Was out Sunday and Monday. I saw 3 hunters on Sunday and none on Monday. I didn't see any hogs either day.

My real question after seeing herds of deer at every location i have tried around the lake is, was there ever general deer hunting in Granger or has it always been a draw system? Why don't they just open it up to the general public to archery only deer hunting for the whole deer season and give more PHL holders a chance to hunt deer?
