Crafty ol heifer! This is the first doe I shot at last trip. The tips of her ears roll down. She made a wide loop and ALMOST caught my wind before she went back to the pen. I kind of want to shoot her lol

So I sent that from the tree but since then the plot has thickened a little...

I lost count of how many deer I saw this evening but I know I had 5 bucks in front of me at one time and 2 different buck fights taking place. 4 of them wouldn't touch 75" if you put them all together. So this buck comes rolling in to check out the commotion. I looked through my binos when he was 100yds out and called him the big 9 that I posted pics of earlier in the thread. I never looked at his horns again, I just went through the pre-shot routine and got ready for him. He bust up one of the sparring matches and bails into the feeder pen. Dead broadside at 18 yards. He's pretty keyed up with everything going on and I anticipate him to drop out. He did not and "I watched" my arrow fly 2" below his chest. He jumps out of the pen but just stands there at 40 yards for like 15-20min. The whole time I'm thinking, "Man he looks like he's sick." He acted just like a gut shot deer but my left/ right was perfect and I watched my arrow go under him. I stared a hole in him on both sides with my binos and never saw him leak a drop.


I get down to go retrieve my arrow t dark and when I grab it, it's wet. Not sticky, but wet. I smell it, no real stench... I get back to the truck and this is what I see...


I'm completely puzzled and have no idea what's going on. I'm going to hunt the same stand with my wheel bow in the morning and just tray it lol a guy shot deer. I'll update when I know something.

No, these are just barrels with holes knocked in the bottom and Natural Light cans to regulate the flow lol

This is a pretty bad picture of the 10 from this evening. He's considerably better than this picture shows. I'm still not convinced that I hit him but I will give it plenty of effort after the hunt in the morning.

Headed back in to the stand 500yds further to the south. My target buck has been there literally all night and left at 5:51. Gonna sit until 9 or so and then go check on yesterday's deer. I have thought about that deal all night and I have never been more puzzled. We'll see in a bit I guess.

I shot a doe super low behind the front legs several years ago that resulted in a similar looking arrow. It was kinda sticky though and she bled little drops for about 150 yards.
Killed her the next weekend and entry and exit from the first shot had about 2 inches of hide between them, an inch lower and it would have been a clean miss.

Steve, I shot under a doe from pretty high up. She jumped and ran about 50 yds. Didn't know what happened and picked up a few acorns. Then she just stood in one place about 20 minutes, then lay down and died. One blade sliced a little gash in her side letting air into her chest and allowing her lungs to collapse.

Well the plot has definitely thickened... followed one of the best blood trails I've ever followed for 75yds and made a lose. Walked the fence row and checked the block of timber he was in and now I'm gridding out the field waiting on the go ahead from the neighbor to cross the fence and get a dog in. My mind has never been more blown!

Zero paunch contents aside from what was on the arrow and you have to remember that blood is 15 hours old in a dry climate by the time those pics were taken. The wetter looking blood this morning was bright like heart blood. Had it been heart he would have died in sight though.

I've been on a whole bunch of these blood trails and this one has be big puzzled. I really don't know what happened. According to my watch I covered 3.21mi making loops looking for him and never found another speck after last blood. We couldn't land permission from the neighbors so getting a dog is out of the question but I believe he's dead. Sucks to shoot a deer like that and lose him; even more so being my first trad buck...

I'm letting my phone charge for 30min or so and headed in with the wheel bow this afternoon to try and get some redemption. I will also keep trying to gain access from the neighbor and will keep y'all posted on that.

Nothing to report in my little corner other than Will and Vic rolled into camp while I was on walk about looking for my deer. Will just laced up a doe and Vic had a couple of pigs get by him. It was a late start yesterday and turned out to be an exceptional hunt. Hoping for similar with a better climax today.

I didn't have enough signal to post this morning and I just got packed up and headed back to Fort Worth. I'm coming back with some management buck meat though. I had a buck with what I thought was a broken main beam come in. I described him to Will and he text back "KILL HIM!" He's a deer they've had pictures of for 3 years and he's always been small and always had a stunted main beam. He blew out but came back 30min later. I text Will that he was back and he told me to kill him again. I love deer meat and I love shooting them with a bow! Pics soon when I get to signal.

We're real close to getting this thing back going! I'm carbing up getting ready for this meeting at the Exxon campus in Houston. As soon as it's over I'm rolling straight south to Laredo to the Pescadito Ranch. I've got hunters coming and if there's time I want to try and stick a javelina and a doe with my recurve. I'll keep everyone updated but this should be a great days off. Lots of new deer showing up in Oklahoma too!
