Need pocket knife recommendation

This is for my 19 yo son's Christmas gift. His current knife is a cheapo, that is falling apart.

Are new Case knives still good? Or, should I try to find a vintage Case? Any other recommendations are appreciated.

Here’s my daily carry, Case Mini Trapper 6207 CV. Easy to sharpen and holds an edge pretty good. Does everything I need it to do in normal circumstances.



My Father in Law carries its big brother, the Trapper, as his primary hunting knife.

I agree with this, as well. Call me fancy but I like a higher end assisted-opening knife with a clip. I’m sure a younger man would think it’s “cool”.

I have a half dozen trappers and stockmen style pocket knives, but they stay home 90% of the time because a pocket clip, thumb open blade is about 300 times more useful. And I use it a lot.

I have a box full of Case Trappers and love them all, swapped to a Sod Buster and carried a variety of them for last 5 years, Now I have a Microtech OTF in my pocket. Man cant have to many knives.

Thanks for all the feedback, but it is starting to feel like I started a war!

Here is what I am going to do.

1. Buy my son a new, Case Trapper. Seems like a good knife, and it is relatively cheap. If he loses it, no worries.

2. Reached out to my cousin, to see if she has my grandfather's Case Trapper, from the late 1960's. I saw this knife in the hands of a lot of old-timers, including my grandfather. If my cousin can find the knife, then she can gift it, to him.

If this works out, then my son will have a good EDC knife, that he can lose, and he has a legacy knife to keep safe.

Cross your fingers, to make this work.

I got a benchmade mine bugout last year. It’s my favorite edc nice size and super light. For me the pocket clip is a must.

Kershaw leek is my favorite. Everyday carry and I field dress all my deer with it

I've had the big, finger opening ZT for the last 8 years or so and it is with out doubt the best knife I've ever owned. I use it many times a day every day.

I collect Case knives.

I stared my son a collection from the year he was born. I add to it often.

Case did a good job back in the 70's in making their tang stamps year specific.

They are easy to find in new condition. Try Ebay or allaboutpocketknives.

If you were closer I'd recommend going by that store. Largest CASE dealer in US and the most knives on display of any store I've been in. Almost every quality knife brand is on display. Plus some of the best customer service from the moment you walk into their store.

On EDC I swing towards spyderco, vg10 steel is pretty good, so is BD1 and bd1n
The pocket clip and thumb hole is awesome
I wouldn’t bother with a knife with 8cr13mov in any brand

Both my kids 20 and 22 love Kershaws They each own like 3-4 of them. When we go on vacation (like Alaska) stopping at a Wal-Mart to see if they have a Kershaw with "Alaska" engraved on it is a must stop.

Does Case make any knives with carbon steel anymore? Seems like all I can find is surgical/stainless steel. I like the patina on the carbon.
