South Central Colorado Elk Hunting Recomendation?

My 20 year old son is doing a DIY Elk hunt right now in Colorado. First time he's ever Elk hunted. He hunted Unit 85 today, but said it was really really rugged and didn't hear much of anything as far as bugling. Anybody hunted ELK in that area that could help a first time hunter out with a general direction of where to go. Are there any units within a couple hours of unit 85 that have good public land opportunities for ELK. Thanks for any help you can offer.

We left that general area this morning after hunting for 6 days. The bulls are crazy quiet still which is hard to believe being this late in September. We found that they were really only bugling if they had a cow locked down. We found 2 that did and they played the game when we bugled. We had the most luck by locating with cow calls and had 2 different bulls come into cow calls.

Some of those areas in 85 they don't talk much. Have some friends that just got back and it sounded like the cows were at lower than normal elevation. Don't know if it's because of water or food but find the cows and bulls will be close by. May have to switch to spot and stalk if they're not talking.

Try Spanish Peaks SWA. Hunted there a few years back for 2nd rifle. The elk use the SWA quite a bit to feed, then leave to go back on private land.

I just back from Colorado city and hunted alfalfa fields with an outfitter, bulls were talking much. Only bull that talked a lot was the herd bull and he kept trying to service a cow but she wasn’t ready. We went to the mountains, didn’t see anything, just herd a few cows.

Cow calls and tree raking for pressured areas with silent elk.
                Glunking might work too.

Anyone hunt unit 77 for archery? I will be heading that way next week for 1st rifle.
