I have a run of the mill Savage Axis II in a 308. Standard, 22” barrel.
Thinking of cutting it down and having it threaded. Is 18” acceptable for total length? I’m not going to be shooting any real distance Thanks |

Any plans to suppress it? If so go as short as 16.5”.

If suppressing 16.5 would work out great

Another vote for 16.5". I built one for myself earlier this year and with a Rem. 700 I did a blueprint job on and a 10 twist Rock Creek Sendero that I cut to 16.5. I can't speak to the Savage but if the gun shoots and the work is done correctly I think you'll be surprised at how far you may be able to shoot that gun accurately.

.308 isn't super velocity depended so 16" is good to go, especially if you want to run a can on it

I’ve got an 18” Bergara 308 that I run only suppressed. Launches factor Nosler 165gr ballistic tips at about 2670 fps. I would not hesitate to go 16.5” if you are going to suppress it

I have both and in the stand you don't really notice the difference on a bolt gun with a 5-6" suppressor, imo.
The 18" definitely shoots better, and has a more pleasing tone. |

I had one cut down to 16" and run it suppressed. Its one of my favorite truck guns.

Yeah, if going to suppress with no long distance then you will be happy with the 16.5"...I plan to shoot my 700 AAC a lot more for doe work this season.
