Txdot consultant

Does anyone know a consultant that works to influence Txdot on projects? I am on the board of our HOA and Txdot is planning some improvements on the road the services our neighborhood. We think it would be in the best interest of our community to hire someone who could help guide us on how to influence the project for the best outcome of our neighborhood. Not even sure if there are people or companies that do this.

I don't know how much you will be able to "influence" TxDOT. They have their processes and are pretty set in their ways for road design and construction.

Your best and cheapest options are to reach out to the local engineer for the City or find the area engineer for TxDOT and see if you can schedule a meeting to voice your concerns about the proposed roadway layout.

If those options do not pan out for your situation then you can likely find a local transportation engineering firm and talk to them. They will likely have some TxDOT experience and can draw up some alternative layouts that will work for you and TxDOT. They will likely know the area TxDOT engineer and will be better equipped to navigate proposing a change in the original design. This option will likely cost you some money though.

Many variables but it may largely depend on where the project stands in regards to their project schedule. If it’s in an early stage (e.g., environmental review or early planning) then you may have some success but if the project is in a later stage (50- 90% design completion) then it may be an uphill battle since a lot of money/time has been spent on getting the project to the late stage design. Environmental Review (biological/cultural resources) period is often a good window of opportunity to comment, if provided with an opportunity to comment. They may listen to you but no guarantee they will act on your comments unless they’re compelled to by some law/rule/regulation.

As suggested above, probably best to get in touch with the local TxDOT engineer and municipal staff to get a feel for where things stand.

Get with the Area Engineer first. They will be who is responsible for the project. If you need to escalate get with then District Engineer. If you really feel the need to put pressure on them, as a last resort, get with your State Rep and go through them.
