Because it’s permitted. When you order 4/0 Urd it comes with a 2/0 neutral. When you order #2 urd it comes with a #4 neutral.

Check out 310.15(B)(7)(4) in 2017 code
      It moved to 310.12 (D) in 2020

I was assuming he was running to a sub panel in well house. That way he could have 120v lights and plugs in there. If he’s just feeding the well, you are correct. No neutral needed in that case.

Make sure you run a neutral AND ground to all sub panel locations

Yes, it will be to a sub panel in well house. Having lights and a an outlet comes in handy.

Perfect. The wire and conduit sizes I stated are correct.

You will put a 40a breaker at main service to well house. In the well house sub panel put a 30a for well and a 15-20a for lights and plugs.

In the main panel you will put a 100a breaker for shop.

                    appreciate all the info.
What size sub panel is recomended for shop/well house?

Shop should/planned to have 1 50 amp breaker for welder and 3 20 amp breakers for lights/plugs.

You can put a 6/12 panel in the well house. I would put a 12/24 in the shop. Both typically rated at 125a.

one last question. I figure it is OK, but thought I would ask anyways.
My well house is on the way to shop. So...would it be OK to run both Conduits(well & shop) in same trench ? I would veer off to well for the well conduit. I figure to rent a 24" rocksaw to trench with.
A trencher may work with the rock layer, but I don't want to find out the hard way I was wrong.

Perfectly fine. Typical installs only require 18” of cover

I know it’s allowed I’ve just never thought it to be good practice.

Flash, my response was to the question "why the reduced size neutral". I was not saying he shouldn't pull a neutral to his subpanel.

                                Do what Flash is saying.

Anything that feeds a sub panel has to have 4 wires.

you can down size the neut one size.

My house has a 200 amp feed through panel on a pole. about a 100 foot to the house. came off that panel with 100 amps to the shop
