    Are we called to be the lamp or the light?

    Please reply with your answer and brief explanation.

    I've always thought of myself as the lamplighter, so both.

      I would have to go with lamp- All my righteousness is counted as dung.
      Therefore any light coming from me is not my own.

        We are to be a light to the world. Matt 5:14. Part of the Beattitudes.

                The Bible clearly states we are to be the light of the world.

                I did a search for Light in the NASB. There was 262 results. Some where for lightning.
                Which is one of the things I was contemplating this morning;
                Thunder and Lightning. Can't have thunder without lightning.

                Can't have light without a lamp.
                A lamp creates the light. Following the theme of this thread. Jesus is the lamp. I'm the light, the result of His creation; see Genesis 1; without him I'm darkness.
                I can create nothing new, save no one. I can make the introduction to Him.

                    As most have stated... we are to be the "light of the world" per Matthew. A lamp is just a vessel for the source of the light (oil in biblical times). I am a vessel for the light that lives inside of me. Jesus and His spirit are the source of the light. I have to be an available vessel (lamp) so that the light of Jesus will shine on the world around me.
