Sounds good if your ISD sucks.. But you do realize that private specialist will tell you what you want to hear, right?

I'm sure some are way better than others but you still have to be smart about it.

The original point of my wife's rant was...Why get your kid tested if they're showing zero signs of a learning disability?

Also keep in mind that most kids do not want to learn, read, do math, write, etc.. Most will buck and fight it. So a lot that fight it are perfectly normal. But parents are looking for an excuse why it's not their fault or their kids fault.

And for those with kids that really have a learning issue...Stop getting so defensive. No one said that no kids have issues.

I talked to my wife last night about this. She read the first page of posts on this thread and that was all she could stomach. She used the word unethical in talking about outside parties, yes spouses, about student's potential issues, especially special needs. She also spoke about privacy laws and the potential of being sued, but she isn't a lawyer. But she is smart enough not to open that door by talking to people, including me, about those issues.

Outside the kids, yeah my wife will complain about some things at her work, but she loves what she does.

The learning disabilities sure seem to be wildly over diagnosed.

I have read most of this thread, and my head started hurting, mostly due to the difficulty of comprehending some posters' meaning because of punctuation errors!.

Tim, I agree with Brett. I cannot understand why this is a major problem for your wife. Why is she stressed because a parent has a reading coach for their child? If the child is reading better, isn't that a good thing? I simply don't see the problem.

I'm sure you have data to support that, right?

              Common sense.

Some kids (as well as adults) just aren’t going to be as smart or learn as quickly as other peers. Today’s society seems to try and find something to blame or use as a crutch for that. No parent wants to accept their kid may be a little slow. My mom was in special education for over 30 years and knew full well the kids that needed the help and the others taking up the time for those that really needed it.

I’m sure saying that will hurt some feelings and isn’t directed at those with serious disabilities. There is a huge difference in serious disabilities and what we are seeing in today’s society being labeled as a disability.

If your boss forced you to do work that you knew/thought was unproductive while also taking away time from productive work would you be upset about it?

I don’t know if I’m understanding the same reason about being upset about an outside reading coach, I took it to mean the additional work a teacher has to do once a kid is classified, and the teacher thinking that kid has no specific issue.

So no data, just talking about things you don't know about like a lot of people on this thread.

I worked at Texas Education Agency for 15 years. There are very, very specific rules and laws regarding services to kids with disabilities. It's not uncommon for school personnel to sidestep them and/or not be completely knowledgeable about them. In fact, some of them don't WANT parents to know what legal rights they have. There are strict rules in place about testing, parent notification, meetings, evaluation, cost, instructional adaptations, etc. and they absolutely must be followed. Period, no exceptions. If they are not followed, there are complaint processes in place.

As a starting point, you need to go here and carefully read the TEA Dyslexia Handbook.

Also, chat with the Dyslexia Coordinator at your ESC - in your case, I believe it's ESC 13. Before you do, go through this web site carefully:

Helping your students with dyslexia succeed.

Do NOT depend on the school to dot their i's and cross their t's. It really doesn't matter whether your kid has Dyslexia or not, the procedures still must be followed. The onus is on you as a parent to know what they are and know what your rights are. Do your homework.

Some people in education have no balls.... AP's or Principals who are old school and don't care are a dying breed.

                      Just like society...SOFT!!!

Lol. You have zero data to the contrary.

I'm not the one that made the original statement.

I didn't read anything about Mrs. River Rat having to do extra work. I don't understand the rant or why she is stressed out. If the child is reading better, that should be pleasing to all.

Thanks for posting that. Maybe it will be helpful to some parent that hasn't had to go through this yet.

Here what I think he’s getting at when I went to school everyone put their butt in the chair until class was over. Now you have the one kid that has to have his stand up deck, or some kids have a bouncy ball they sit on and bounce the hole class period while other kids are trying to learn. Get back to hitting these baby’s in the mouth.
