    Fireplace Grate

When we built our house I had a 48” wood burning fireplace put in, can never be too big when it comes to fire in my opinion.

The grates for a fireplace this size cost more than I wanted to spend and I have been meaning to make my own for for last 7 years...

Here is what I have been using, which are readily available at Lowes and cheap!

    Here is the upgraded model.

Made it out of 1/2” square bar. Looked at 3/4” but preferred the 1/2”.

My wife complained the fire made the living room too hot before, now she won’t be able to stay in the same room now that I can get a serious fire going.

Love a big fireplace. I’d love to have one of the colonial walk-in fireplaces from the 1700’s.

        Agree, those are awesome.

Nice project, I would say great project but it is already that! Your much larger grate size just “fits” that fireplace better. And my opinion the ½ inch bar looks like the right choice too. Good work on this.

              Hmmm square tubing?

Won’t the heat of the fire warp it? Most grates I have seen are solid bar stock.

Not a fireplace but a fire pit/smoker at dreamland BBQ in Alabama.

I’ve made them out of sucker rod for fireplaces and bbq pits. They last a long long time and I’m cooking on my pit about 3 times a week with mesquite.

Solid square bar but if just A-36 it’s still gonna warp when it gets hot enough but way better than crap sold in box stores

                      Bar not tubing.
