All right men, Help Me out!!

I’ve tried safety razors, single blades up to a 6 blade. Cheap, super expensive and everything in between. Tried several different shaving creams. Same results.

I’ve taken to shaving only twice a week because no matter what, the picture below is the result!


What am I doing wrong??

I like to be clean cut and am in sales so I feel it’s important, but man it sucks!!

Ever tried shaving in the shower? Take a hot shower in the mornings, shave in the shower, don't mash too hard. Other than that maybe an electric?

Dont shave against the grain. If i shave upward on my neck, it looks like yours. Otherwise, electric razor.

You remind me of me.
Every hair I have grows a different way.
When I was in the oilfield it was horrible!
My throat looked like a dog been chewing on me.
One of the guys turned me on to C.O. Bigelow shaving cream, and that stuff works miracles.
It's the absolute slimiest, slipperiest crap you've ever lathered up with, but that blade won't be able to grab your skin the way it normally does.

This^^^^. I haven’t bought shaving cream in 25yrs. Are you cleaning the razor out every few strokes?

Will also try shaving in the shower right at the end.. I’ve been fighting it for years!

Get you a good high dollar electric razor. Mine did the same at the neck. Didn’t matter if I shaved with grain, against grain, in shower, hot water, cheap razor, expensive razor, lots of blades, less blades or every cream imagined. Always the same. Super sensitive at the neck. Now I use my electric razor with zero issues. No more blood and it’s silky smooth.

Those don't work for me.
I've spent thousands of dollars on em and never found 1 worth a flip.
I have extremely course thick hair.
My girlfriend says I have fat hair .
It's chews those little toys up and spits em out.

Same here. Never could shave with a real razor without rash or bleeding. I have to use electric & no issues. Worse comes to worse get a good electric & then take a good portable with you so if you had to clean up a bit more during the day

You may have foliculitus. It's what I've got. I've been fighting it for almost 20 years.
Your hairs grow curly and become ingrown due to the way they're shaped. I haven't had much of a remedy, though I've tried everything mentioned here.
What I've found works best is not shaving, but using a beard trimmer or a hair trimmer like they use to trim your neck after a hair cut. Get's it close enough for Government work.
If I MUST shave, I wash my face and neck thoroughly with a scrubbing pad and I user At Ease Shave Gel and put it on immediately after getting out of the shower, liberally, and let it sit for about a minute before starting to shave with a Gillette skin guard razor, then use the jack black ingrown hair solution.

If you find something that works for you, please share. I'd love to be clean shaven from time to time but dadgummit it hurts.

Shave in the shower and USE shaving cream. Massage the shaving cream on and make sure it’s the last thing you do before getting out, give your facial hair plenty of time to soften up. Switch to SCHICK HYDRO 3 razors. I’ll use the Hydro 5 if I can’t find the 3 bladed razor but since I’ve found a reliable source through Amazon I’ve stuck with the HYDRO 3. The bar across the blade makes a huge difference in the way the razor runs across the skin.
If the combination of those two things doesn’t work, just grow a beard.

Shaving in the shower is great.

If that doesn’t work for you, I recommend hot shower and good massage/scrubbing on your face especially the sensitive areas to soften it up. Then shave with or without a good shave cream.

I no longer shave my face, but am bald and shave my neck below my beard. I can empathize with the bloody neck and shirt collar stains. Hot shower and massage on that area paired with shave cream or gel has helped a ton.

I struggle with the same. All good advice here and I’ve done them, too. Here’s some other things to try:

Pre-Shave Oil - before and in addition to cream. Helps to protect the skin and helps the razor to glide.

Pressure is key. A lot of guys push down too hard. Use as little pressure as possible and let the blade do its job. Don’t overshave an area.

Cold compress applied immediately after shaving to soothe the skin and close the pores.

Use something like Tend Skin, BumpStopper, etc. between shaves to help heal and protect the sensitive areas.

And my personal favorite, always shave with a clean, sharp, HOT blade! For reasons similar to shaving in a hot shower (hair is softened and pores are open), heating the blade as hot as possible is my secret. I have an Insinkerator which produces nearly boiling water instantly. It’s way hotter than your typical hot water temp at a bathroom sink or in a shower. Like the old cliche, “Like a hot knife through butter.” Worst case try heating some water in the microwave or stovetop, regularly dip your blade into it and see if it doesn’t help.

In addition to some of the things mentioned already, what helped me more than anything was getting a good high quality safety razor and buying the sharpest blades I could find. The razor is heavy enough I don’t need to push at all, just let the razor do the work. I also never shave against the grain and be mindful that the grain can change. It doesn’t all grow the same direction.

I had problems with ingrown hairs and shaving irritation like you and it was no fun, my wife bought it for me as a gift. I’m sure they just finished lasering some chic’s bikini area before they did me...it’s been a game changer. No more ingrown hairs and shaving is much easier. Do it while you’re young because it doesn’t work on gray hair...

And trust me, it hurts like a mofo and it takes several iterations.

I’m in sales and haven’t clean shaved since covid. I use my manscape 2.0 Monday and Wednesday when I have to have teams meetings.


I went months without shaving and wore a gaiter during the meetings until my boss called me out.

I had that problem a while back. At the time I was using a mug and brush. Come to find out my mug soap was infected with staph. Threw that mug and brush away. Started applying a thin layer of antibiotic ointment as aftershave and bought some new razors. Cleared up just fine.

I had the same issue, plus shaving annoys the hell out of me . For whatever reason I never feel like messing with it.

I started shaving only once a week and in the shower. I go with the grain to get the big stuff off, then I lightly go back across against the grain to get it closer. I turn the water to cold and let it run over my neck for a little while before I get out as well. It's not perfect, but it's definitely not the bloodbath it used to be.

I started shaving immediately after I got out of the hot shower 5 or 6 years ago. Made a huge difference for me. The razors started lasting 3-4 times longer to. It was like cutting "Butta."

Like others have said...

Shave in a HOT shower...I got a mirror that sticks to the wall and you fill it up with water to keep it from fogging. Use a pre-shave (I am a fan of Proraso products) after you almost burn yourself in the HOT water. Use a good cream or soap (again, I use green Proraso). I use Derby safety razors, but your stick has something to do with it as well. Use a good brush and get a good lather (should not be too thick). Take your time...let the blade do the work, should just glide and not pull. Don't put pressure on your skin. And as much as it sucks, get a good Alum Block to rub on your neck after the shave. Wash your face and put a good aftershave on.

I have sensitive skin and have all but eliminated my irritation issues with the above.

My recommondation is to shave in shower.
Shaving cream I like is (Dollar Shave Club) Shave Butter, Cremo, and Shave Secret.
They are all different and good in their own ways.

Good advice above. On a side note, if you are in sales in Midland I would think a couple days of whiskers would fit you right in with the masses. Guess it all depends what you are peddling!

I shave 3x's week when working. MWF. In shower, shampoo/rinse, then exfoliate with apricot scrub (St. Ives/Target Brand), rinse face, apply hydrating shave gel, finish washing body, use Gillette Pro Glide vibrating razor and I used to shave with grain but now I can shave against and no more ingrown hairs or cuts and knicks. Light pressure, just enough to remove hair and if you can add against the grain, even lighter pressure. Added about 30 seconds to my overall 5 minute shower. Hot water, steam, scrub, gel and razor all added up to fix the issue. Don't exfoliate more than 3x's week. This is a combination of article from Men's Health and trial and error.

I have the same issue (on the little amount of Joe Dirt mocked facial hair I grow), so I use an electric trimmer. It get pretty close, but now razor close. Never any rash.

Started shaving daily for work over 15 years ago. Starting off, I had some issues with irritation, dry skin, etc.

I agree with many of the comments above. The items that worked for me -

1. Sharp razor. At least in my experience, disposable razors are ok, but don't over-use them. Use for a few sessions and dispose.

2. Moist skin - Good shave gel, hot shower, etc., all help with getting good moist skin. Even if you don't shave in the shower, applying shave gel and leaving it on your face for a couple minutes before shaving helps me a lot. I use Edge for sensitive skin. At least in my experience, higher end products didn't help me that much.

3. Shave daily or every other day if possible. Shaving a weeks worth of stubble is harder on both your face and razor.

4. Use a good after shave gel/lotion. I prefer one with alcohol. If dry skin persists, try applying a moisturizing cream once or twice a day.

Honestly, shaving daily was tough at first, however, my face/neck, just sort of got used to it. Most guys I know that have problems shaving simply don't shave very often to begin with.

I've found that if I shave after a hot shower and rinse with cold water and never go against the grain (How the hair grows). The only thing is that by going with the grain, you have to shave more frequently. I have dollar shave club and their shave butter is the best I have found for me. Also, I have their four blade razors and I can shave about three times with them before I need to replace them. Ive tried electric razors and it absolutely destroyed my skin. Maybe I didn't try for long enough. Some have said it takes getting used to.

I did laser hair removal because of ingrown hairs. You are right, it hurts. Felt like a hot rubber band snapping my throat/neck over and over. I went through the recommended number of treatments. I still have to shave everyday. That laser didn't do crap for me. Total waste of money.

I've been using this trimmer for years, will shave skin close or with guards. I used to use brush and bowl type shaving soaps with a safety razor but this was so much easier and faster. Blades last about 3-4 months. I only trim a little now as the beards been growing since Dove season.

I put my razor in a cup with baby oil, after I use it................
My blades seem to last sooooo much longer, and seem to stay sharp longer.....

Agreed. Hot Shower with ONLY soap. I haven't bought shaving cream in over 20 yrs. No Issues
