    Snake ID?

Pretty sure I know what this beauty is, but need confirmation from the GS. I let Diesel, my big Rottie out to go to his pen and when he got to the NW corner, I saw this one in the middle of the pen. I called for Diesel to get him back inside so as to not cause a problem. He came right back to me and right OVER this snake. All it did was recoil the front part of it's body a little, did not strike. I got Diesel inside and sort of pushed escorted this one to the weeds along the Lodge where it has not been mowed or shredded. They can haul butt when needed!

Defensive move by the rat snake, he knew the dog didn't have a clue he was there and just wanted to go his away. Something I've found when calmly picking up and holding a rat snake, a kill all snakes person walks up, the snake instantly goes into strike mode on them. But I'm the one holding the snake, they just know.

My grandpaw would have called it a chicken snake and grabbed it by the tail, swung it around his head a few times and popped it like a whip and it's head would fly off and land 30 feet away. Rest of the snake would go into the hog's feed trough. Paw didn't like no snakes messing around his hen house swallowing his fresh eggs.

Texas Rat Snake and a purdy one too.

Last week on my way home, I saw a guy pull off the road, get out of his truck, only wearing a pair of shorts. Then pick up a large snake out of the back seat of his truck. Just casually carried it around the front of the truck, then tossed it off into the grass.

At first I thought, oh big rat snake. Then I realized the snake was almost 3" in diameter, along with being pretty big. I started thinking it was a boa or python. So I turned around and went back to talk to the guy.
Turns out it was a huge rat snake. The guy said they get into the pen where he keeps his ducks and eat the duck eggs, all the time. So he catches them and releases them where I saw him releasing that one. That was the biggest rat snake I have ever seen. The guy was casual as could be, carrying a huge rat snake on his arm. The way the snake acted, you would have though it was dead. It was very much alive. I guess the snake had already eaten plenty of eggs when he found it, so it was fat and happy. My experience, is the one time a rat snake will get very aggressive, is when they are in a nest try to eat eggs and you try to remove them. Every time I have tried to remove a rat snake from a nest, they get very aggressive.
