Ok my 2014 Chevy service manual says change the oil every 7500 miles
I was just watching a video saying that is a waste of money and a gas Moter should be about 10,000-12,000 between changing
And a diesel about 15,000-20,000 on a full synthetic oil ( Schaffer oil) I use castrol GTX Magnatech ,
What y’all thoughts on this ? 7500 to short or 10-12 to long
Wife drives a CTS and drives till the computer says it’s time
So have no idea on her mileage Before the change.

P.S when to change serpentine belt ? I am @ 50,000 and have a brake recall so it’s dealership bound soon

I have a 2017 F250 6.7 and change the oil every 5k so I can have my tires rotated with the oil change and water fuel separator done at the same time every 15k. My last oil change, air filter, tire rotation and water fuel separator was around $460. To me it’s not worth my time to make the extra trip to rotate the tires in between oil changes.

My wife’s 2017 Audi S7 gets an oil change every 10k or once a year. I’ve blown 3 tires in 8k miles so I factor an extra $470 x2 for every oil change.

Oil last a longer nowadays than when the old 3K was the rule.

Doing it every 5K makes for easy math. 5,10,15,20 and so on.

I change mine about every 7k, the minder will come in at 7500 or so. (6.7PSD)

My wife's truck is on the 5k regiment, always shows life left on the oil death countdown screen.

04 tundra has oil changes every 5000 miles for 380,000 miles. I'll stick with that routine on my 16 tundra.

I use a full synthetic and change at 10,000 miles. Schaefer is what I use in diesel engines. It is good stuff. Most of my driving is highway miles so I'm pretty sure that I could go longer between changes. Talking with the Schaefer rep several years ago, he was testing and not changing until the lab report said that the oil was beginning to break down. I remember him saying that he had tested at 14,000 miles and the oil was still in good shape. I'm not that interested in pulling samples and mailing them off for testing, so I just settled on 10K as a reasonable point.

I will say, though,that I don't buy into the lifetime transmission fluid and stuff like that. I do still believe that changing ]our fluids (oil, differential, tranny...) gives you an idea of how your vehicle is operating. My 14 F150 is just under 100k, so I just did the plugs, and next I'll do tranny, transfer case, rear diff, and belts just so I can say they're good at that mileage milestone.

One thing I live by on vehicles, is if there is anything telling me to change the oil and I cant recall when it should of been done, I change it. Cheap insurance. Every time I ride with my wife I look at the oil change sticker and then her mileage. I never go off of the meter built into the vehicle unless the sticker is gone for some reason.

But gas motor, 5k miles. Ford 6.7 diesel, 7.5k miles.

Your 2014 only has 50k miles? Wow. I feel each vehicle is different. Some can go longer. On a gas rig 7k is about all I want to go

Mobile 1 Synthetic EP states it's good for 15k, so I figure at 10k I'm fine.

I’ve been going 10-12k between oil changes for a while now. I run full synthetic. My Tundra has 164k miles and my commuter car has 289k miles. If you’re changing every 5k miles you’re just wasting money. It absolutely does no damage to go 10,12 or even 15k miles between changes if you run a quality synthetic oil.

Conventional oil 3000. Synthetic oil 5000+. Also the brands make the difference.

I run Mobil 1 synthetic in my 99 Tacoma and change it every 10k

I have checked it before at 5k and it still looked like when I put it in, 7.5k and it was tinted but not dark so I figure 10k is fine.

Truck has 291k on it and still going fine

Matter of fact it is getting oil changed in the driveway before lunch

Mobile 1 Synthetic at 10k or once a year.. I've done that with my 2008 F150 since new. With most of vehicles it ends up being once a year, My F150 only has 97k miles on it. I guess I don't drive a lot anymore. The RV is the only one that may get close to 10k per year.

Clean new oil is the life of your engine especially with all the sophisticated new pollution and fuel economy gadgets in motors today like variable cam and valve timing, cam drive chains and other advance/retard components. I am in the old school 3000 mile class and even more so now with all the new engine features.
It helps that most engines now hold several more quarts of oil to help it last longer. Even so it still gets dirty that you can't see or feel. All sorts of corrosive contaminants from blow by on the rings no matter how good the rings seal. My new Cheby holds 8 quarts but that's a small price to pay compared to replacing the motor before 200k miles. One VVT lifter or pump valve failure is all it takes.

When I was running Shaffer in my last 3 trucks I changed the oil every 30k . Changed the filter every 10k . I would send the oil to them and they would analyze it and tell me to change it or run it longer . The shop that sent it off for me closed down so I’m not doing that anymore.

Have 2017 ram 2500 with 6.4 hemi. Get oil changed every 5k with tire rotation. Manual says 7500 but do it at 5k. Uses full synthetic. No issues with it. Wufe has a 2015 ram 1500 with 5.7 hemi and change it at 5000 with tire rotation. No issues with either truck. Both trucks only 50,000 on em.

Every 5K regardless of what manual says, even though it’s what is recommended with my Toyota. Easy math to remember when to change it and tires get rotated same time. I’m sure I could go longer but I would have to make separate trips to have tires rotated. Plus, I get my services done at the dealer which does some odd number point inspection every time I go in. Having things checked out every 5K vs 10K could prevent a big problem later down the road. The difference in cost for me of having the oil changed every 5K vs 10K is about $160 a year. That’s not a lot of savings over the course of a year. Plus my dealer gets to look over my truck 4 times a year vs 2.

Engines burn much cleaner that in the past. Oil technologies are better as well.

I use regular Rotella in my Cummins. I’ve run it as high as 16k miles. Had a Blackstone oil analysis and the oil was still sufficient.

Now I normally change around 7500 miles, rotate my tires and the same time and change fuel filters every other change.

Chevys use a little oil, you need to be checking your dip stick, actually open the hood every now and then lol. If I drove 15k with out an oil change It would cost me a motor I think. I'm changing it every 5500 miles about with mobile 1 full synthetic

Shouldn't it be the opposite? If the book, oil, or filter (or all) say to change at 15k then you an bet it's good for more miles than that.

Companies have to sell as much as they can. Zero chance they stretch to the max for what they say. Same with the car manual.

And what's changed to make oil last longer, the oil or car designs?

Does anyone simple pull the dipstick and look at the oil to see if it's dirty?

Both have changed. Engines have tighter tolerances these days and oils are better quality with better performing additive packages.

Im running and changing full synthetic oils at 10k. The owners manuals on my vehicles are saying to change standard oil at 10k so im good.

I buy oil filters, air filters etc in bulk. They are super cheap. I buy my oil with rebates or really good sales.

Im doing full synthetic oil changes for 23 bucks or less. Im not worried that i could save a few more pennies and i know its done right.

I've change the oil in all my vehicles at 10,000 miles using Mobil 1 synthetic for about 20 years, although I have swapped to Schaeffer's for the last few years. The guys at the quick oil change place all got a kick out if the green Schaeffer's oil and rubbed it on their fingers. They said their fingers were still slick even after wiping it off. I have sent off the oil from each vehicle at 10k miles for testing and the report always came back that it was still good. However 10k is good enough for me, so that's when I change it.

$100 for air filter and probably $25 to $35 to rotate tires. They did top off the DPF,

I change it every 5000 miles or so and use synthetic blend. Also rotate tires then. Truck has 208k on it and still going strong. I will let it go longer if mostly doing highway driving but if I'm pulling my camper, a lot of off road driving where it's dusty, or a lot of stop and go driving, I tend to stick with every 5k.

Serpentine belt can probably wait to 100k. This coming from someone whose belt broke on a family vacation that had wife, 3 kids, and a dog on the side of the highway in July and had to get towed to a campground to spend the night to get a belt the next day. But I had over 175k on the belt when that happened. I think you're safe waiting a little longer but don't wait like I did.

1 of the biggest things I see is people no longer check and top off their oil. Check and top it off every 3K or so. Feel the oil. Smell it. If something seems off change it. 5-7K on today's vehicles is ok. Also, take into consideration your conditions. Are you stuck in Houston traffic idling for 5-7k or actual driving. Does it take you 4 months or 14 months to reach 5-7k? As far as the serpentine belt. Noise, cracks, uneven wear replace it. I see belts going 75-125k these days before I recommend replacing. Also, do not wait for the dummy light to change oil. Change it on a schedule.

all of you that change more often, how many times a year do you get it changed. i manage fleet vehicles that hit 10k every 2 weeks ( 6.7 ford) so i have 40 trucks getting oil changed every 3 weeks on average. the 2 biggest issues i run into with these trucks are the fuel system and the A/C

Manual says 3500 for '10 Titan but that is for conventional oil. So I do 7500 for Mobil 1 which I've been using for over 20 yrs. No problems yet with the Mobil @ that frequency.

I do 10K changes on my 2018 Toyota 4Runner as thats what the manufacturer recommends. No issues. People i know have done the oil test kits and paid to have used oil test ran and still have 30-40 percent life left on full synthetic at 10K
