Default In Honor Of...

One of the things I love about traditional archery is an archer can choose to do things for reasons other than maximum efficiency. We're already shooting a stick, so there's nothing to prevent us from making decisions based off of our notions about tradition, and heritage... or in some cases to remember somebody.

As most of you know, one of our own, Randy Madden, suffered a big loss a few weeks ago. I became aware of Kristie's battle with cancer over a year ago, through a fundraiser put on by Michael Arnette of Tall Tines bows. He wanted to raise some money to support Kristie, and in the process I wound up winning a Stickflinger longbow. The bow came in this spring, and I have been getting to know it. It took some doing, as I'm not a longbow guy, but I got it shooting straight in time to go to the Bob Lee memorial shoot, and I started to get along pretty well with it. It's an unassuming combination, actionwood and grey glass, but it's a shooter.

Now what does this have to do with "honor"? Well I was working on broadhead tuning the bow when I got the news that Kristie passed, and something went "click" in my brain. I'm a one bow guy, usually, and you'd be hard pressed to tear my Widow out of my hands, especially when it's a high pressure shot... but I decided right then and there, that this season needs to be different. I busted out the spray paint, and turned that gray glass into hunting camo, and you can consider this post as me making it official. As a "recurve" guy, a "one bow" shooter, and a mediocre bow hunter, I'm making this longbow my main squeeze this season, and it's the first one up until it draws blood, or the season's over. I'm making a non hunting, hunting decision.

Traditional archery is about more than bullseyes and trophy bucks, if we let it be. And I'm going to embrace the less tangible, nearly indescribable awesomeness that comes with the simple stick and string. Probably won't be wearing plaid, and I still will use a tree stand, but this season, I'm going to lean into the memories and stories that make hunting more than just freezer filling. I'm going to hunt with a bow that's special due to circumstance, and I'm going to remember friends and stories every time I see that bow.

So there you have it. Will my actions make a whit of difference in this world full of joys and pains? Nope. Will it cost me on a tough shot sometime in November? Maybe. Will it help me remember more frequently that a friend is hurting? You're darn right it will. I never got the chance to meet her, but this season's going to be in honor of Kristie Madden.

While I welcome the big buck wishes, I think I need to make one point clear.

I am HUNTING with this bow. Not giving up old 12 Ring! If I didn't know better, I'd say you were trying to sabotage my 3D scores!

Good push Malachi.
The deer have moved back in over here. Hopefully we can get you a honor harvest on that stick and start the season of honor harvests sooner than later.

Its squirrel season and theyre plentiful.

You know where to find me.

RIP Mrs Kristie
God bless!

Ya know, I hadn't even thought about a squirrel sticking party... Might need to start the show sooner than I originally figured!

Cool

Shooting gear in honor of someone special is a good thing. I'll be shooting my Big River bows, recurve and longbow, in honor of John, as he and his wife continue on their journey.

Work has had me tearing my hair out lately, and I finally snapped. Tore out the door as soon as it was quitting time, and got in some pig hunting/stump shooting. First time in the wild for this bow... I reckon it needs naming at some point.

Boy, isn't that the truth! It's just a wonderful feeling to slip through the woods with a longbow or recurve in hand.

Well, the Whip is safe with you. I would need the fancy new 10x grip to switch back to a Toelke. As for elk, it isn't in the cards this season. I'll just be pounding the public lands here in TX.

I think I'm just going to photo journal my hunts here through the season.

Evening of September 30th saw me crawling into a sleeping bag in the bed of my truck, with a plan to hike a mile into some public I frequent. Coyotes were howling all night long, and I had even seen a bobcat at last light. I was already having a great hunt, and the season hadn't even started! The plan for the morning was to ease into a spot I picked based off my maps, because my scouting hadn't turned up much sign.

To make a long story short, I picked a great spot, but it's hard to pick a tree in the dark, and I wound up seeing lots of deer, but the only ones in range busted me while I was still looking for the right tree to climb. I eased out fairly early because it was a doe bedding area, the wind was getting iffy, and I wanted to keep it intact for a future hunt. I sat a funnel in the afternoon, but saw a whopping zero deer. Remarkably, I never got a crack at a squirrel, which is usually not an issue where I'm hunting. First blood will have to wait I guess!

Helical, I went with Iron Wills, courtesy of Tradman!

And yes, it's fairly open Gary. The grass is so matted down in there it looks like cattle have been in there, but it's all deer sign.

Easy Big Fella.
Malachi aint built like a scrub hackberry. He has gone beefcake and built like an oak.

I got to shoot the bow and put on a squirrel stalk when Malachi came out to do a field gear check in my trees. Super sweet shooter. He was up a tree and lowered the bow to descend and I ran off with the bow. No squirrel.

I think it might need some dampeners on the limbs. Malachi frowned at the idea.

It's quiet. Byron's just picking up a little vibration in the riser. You can't hear it at the shot. Especially if I shoot my widow first!

I'm 85% deaf in my left ear and I think my bow is loud. So I put dampeners on it. Still loud. Yet I don't have much issue with it hunting. Unless it's just really still. But I'm pretty sure they hear that arrow hissing towards them.
