What a treasure you have! Especially since it’s been in your family for generations.
As for furniture restoration specialists, you might call the curators of some of the collecting history museums in your part of the state. Actually, I once worked on an exhibit with the folks at the Winedale Historical Center which, as their website states, is a collection of “10 nineteenth-century wooden structures, period furnishings, material culture, and an outstanding collection of Texas hand-crafted decorative arts. It was assembled by Houston philanthropist Miss Ima Hogg and then gifted to The University of Texas at Austin in 1967.”
With one of the largest collections of early 19th century Texas furnishings, surely the have a number of restoration specialists on speed dial.
Good luck! I would think this would be an exciting project and I love your idea to display the toolbox and its contents!

So just made a cool discovery. Since the lid hinges are broken off I never looked at the underside of the lid. Score. Theres a metal pin latch that frees them. The inside is in amazing shape. Really wanting to restore the exterior now but not anything drastic. Light restoration that keeps the integrity of the item intact.

Shop Howard Restor-A-Finish Oil-based Walnut Semi-transparent Satin Interior Stain (1-pint) in the Interior Stains department at Lowe's.com. Restore It - Don't Strip It. Permanently revive and restore the original color and luster in one step, without removing any of the existing finish. Most wood
this might be worth a try on the finish try a little on a spot that doesn’t show
I have my grandpa old tool chest that looks a whole lot like that one i’m also in spring i wonder if one of the old family’s from here might have had a guy that built them here ?
