Well
If it's made out of plastic its a bobber
If it's made out of cork its a cork.
Strike indicator is completely foolish.
Ever have a turtle grab the bait and pull the bobber under? The cork going underwater indicates a strike. But yet the turtle was simply sampling the bait.
What about when there's 3-4 hatchlings feasting on the bait and they pull the bobber under, indicating a strike...
When fishing with a cork there's 3 things you need to watch it for
1) Makes sure it floats, but doesn't float too much
2) If it just moves around a little, its a nibble. Let it be
3) If it goes under could be a turtle, hatchlings.
4) The rod tip. If it bends and straightens than bends and straightens and bends again see 2 & 3
5) If the bobber goes and is soon followed by your fishing pole, you 2,3&4

Cork, because I grew up on the coast fishing saltwater. I would bet everyone who says bobber grew up a ways from the coast fishing ponds, rices, creeks, possibly lakes. Probably older.
Living on the coast, fishing on a pier, then hearing someone say something about their Bobber or how they caught a catfish. Would always let me know they were inlanders, possibly not even Texans. Later years, I realized not everyone who uses those words, were foreigners/Yankees, ECT. That’s the point I started using the term inlanders.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the fact that some of these folks that live along the coast might call it a poppin' bobber...
