Default This mornings aimless wandering thought

I cast no stones.
Just wandering/wondering.

Recent threads have left me curious.

When someone shares bad news or maybe even good news why does one say they're sorry to HEAR that.
By saying it that way aren't we subconsciously telling the person sharing we don't want to hear it?

If we say I'm sorry, doesn't that just give a general one size fits all response?

Wouldn't I'm sorry for blank, be a more empathetic way of responding?

Again I don't know just throwing this out there.

ME? I prefer to use I'm sorry for.....
In MY MIND I'm making a personal connection. I have a desire to make personal connections not people connections.

Sorry to hear thats the way you feel.

Just a socially acceptable way to show concern without getting into someone's personal business imo.

I can see your point. Just think it's a matter of semantics. I think most respond the way they've learned through parents, members at church, etc. I doubt any disrespect or lack of humanity is intended how people express their sympathies.
As far as online I'd think that someone just caring enough to open the thread and attempt to make a sympathetic response should be appreciated because most just scroll on by.

This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer goes to the bank that will give you $100 if you're not greeted with a "hello". He is greeted by everyone but not with "hello" so he wants the $100.

A sincere message is sent. Let's not overcomplicate things.

I started it of as I cast no stones as a way of saying.
When you read this post it's NOT about anyone. It's my personal observation and potential topic for discussion. Please join in and participate in it. The topic is......

Not at all.
In MY MIND simply means that's how I choose do it.
What you choose to do is just that. What you choose to do.
What you choose to do and how you choose to has no bearing on me.

I guess that's just another way of saying that's too bad that, that happened. I don't think it's meant as I'm sorry I heard that I wish you'd have told someone else. That wouldn't be cool.

It means, I'm sorry to hear that (it happened). Not I'm sorry you told me.
It's the world we live in now, where the "victim mentality" wants to disect every word and try to find a way to be a victim of everything rather than finding the good and being uplifted by it.

That's what I thought too.
About 11 years ago a bunch of guys I served with in Naples Italy with got together for our 1st annual reunion. One of my close friends, not sure I can call him that as well don't keep in touch much, was there.
We stayed up one night talking and catching up on life.
I found out he had a Daughter and she was the apple of his eye. Unfortunately mom and him didn't get along so he didn't get to see her much while he was homeless.
I was shocked at!
I knew he was adopted and some of his struggles around that.
Anyways he studied Psychology in college to understand people better.
He is the one who told me what I shared in my initial post.
I chose then to change the way I reply.

I was just wondering if anyone else ever thought about it.

I told him that I'll never change my phone number. You need me call me we'll figure it out together.

Last I heard he was in the Army and was the Base CO's Driver.

Matter of fact I'm going to text him see where he is tonight.

I like a man who is not above a little existential thinking!

I suspect the reference to “hearing” about news, good or bad, is a holdover from the days when most news we heard about was conveyed personally or by word of mouth. In other words, long before the proliferation of electronic media in the digital age.

I’m just speculating, though.
