Thumbs up Bowhunt: Zambia's Luangwa Valley

Well, looks like July may be my trip to Zambia! I am looking for any insight from TBHers that have hunted the valley.......hopefully with bow but gun insight is more than welcomed also! (I have already read old threads that mentioned Zambia or the valley, GOOD STUFF.) Only requirements currently is a recent COVID-19 test result, just like last year for my Alaska Dall Sheep trip. I just spoke to the PH about the trip after 5 or so emails. He had just gotten in from a day of tracking elephants with a Houston client.....and saw plenty! I am pretty fired up about this 14 days of bowhunting into the belly of the beast. Leopard is my primary target followed by hippo & croc. These 3 have been on my list since I was a kid staring at the pages of Outdoor Life and Field & Stream magazines back in the late 70's. I never would have dreamed it was going to be a bowhunt however.......lol!

Man, I can’t wait to follow along! I had a trip booked to Zambia for my 40th birthday. Was going to do elephant, hippo, and croc with a bow. I got a call about 6 months out from the hunt that Zambia was closing their elephant hunting. I didn’t know which route to go and I moved the hunt to Zimbabwe. I never got an elephant and the hunt wasn’t that great. I did kill a hippo with a bow so that was a plus. One day I will make it to Zambia. Trying to make that happen for my 50th.

Oscar, my guide in Zambia was Andrew Baldry. He pretty much knows everything you can about hunting Zambia. If you want, I can introduce you to him. One of the wildest places I’ve been. No fence, dangerous game, black mambas, hippo attack, lions outside of camp. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Yes, since bowhunters cannot anchor it with a brain shot like a rifle hunter. It is critical to get the lungs punctured. The croc will head for the water and "may or may not" submerge due to lung damage. More importantly it will usually head for some type of land, or die in the water and be recovered.

That's what everyone is telling me, it is no joke! Heck, the charter flight to camp is almost 3 hours.........or 12 hours by Land Cruiser! Thanks for the offer and I will let you know if I hit some snags.

I hunted there in the mid 90's, if you are looking for big croc's, they were plentiful back then. The river has cut banks in places where you could get within a few feet of some of them, which I didn't want to do.

Yessir, I have been working with her since 2008'..........lots of good times during show season!
I also sent SCI's Barbara Crown an email to give me the latest lay of the land there.
I also just talked with my longtime agent Patrick at "Travel with Guns" travel agency in San Antonio and looks like the best route is thru D.C. and then Ethiopia. Gonna be a ugly price tag but I kinda expected that. Few more loose ends and I am wiring my deposit!!!

I bet it has changed a lot since I was there, I sure hope so.
One side of the concession was bordered by the Nat Park, their were several villages in the area and lots of meat poaching everywhere. Lions and leopard were plentiful along with hippos and crocs, plains game not so much.
It was a wild place for sure armed bandits, tsetse flies galore and mosquito's, definitely a malaria area. We had to be very careful around buff and ele's they were very aggressive, most likely because they had a poachers snare on them at one time or some lead in them from a muzzle loader or and AK.
In the mid 90's it hadn't been to long since the instability of gov and the purge of white business owners so it was pretty much a lawless area but since then a lot of safari operators have moved in there so I'm sure it is much better.
You doing this trip brought back a lot of memories for me

Working thru that now with my Baylor rheumatologist! I was hit with a autoimmune issue 3+ years ago so want to make sure I wont run into any hiccups that I would find myself using my Global Rescue membership because of a stinking bug!

Just got another little piece squared away. My contact at SCI sent me some links and information to assure things geaux smoothly with importing leopard, etc.

Hi O.T.,

Iím doing great, thanks.
I expect you have survived that lovely storm responsible for icy roads full of multiple vehicle pile ups, and causing those rolling black outs throughout Texas during freezing weather. Yikes!
Regarding your question, you should not have any problems importing those trophies. Get everything in as fast as you can. USFWS now offers a web based permit application. Go to https://fwsepermits.servicenowservices.com/fws/ to apply for your leopard. Get all the info to show enhancement from your operator. See the article Iíve attached about it. This is what I wrote in Safari Times a while back.
You know what to do for COVID tests, right? I attached a hunt report form. Send it back to me with pictures when you get back!

Hugs,
