I'm really late at posting this. I was fortunate enough to go on my first elk hunt in mid/late September with my childhood friend Benjie (bdphunt). We arrived early enough to get a hunt in Friday afternoon. We saw some spikes, a cow and a 3 point. Saturday morning was our first official morning of the hunt. We heard bugles all morning but nothing was really responsive. We kept working along the side of a mesa, moving a few hundred yards at a time.
We finally sat down to take a break and our guide hit the cow call. This bull bugled at less than 50 yards. We couldn't see him through the trees but could tell he was coming. I practiced all summer at 40,50, 60,70 yards. Of course, the bull comes in at 9 yards and gives me a frontal shot. I watched several videos and had made my mind up that I would take a frontal shot if it was under 20.
The first shot went in his neck above the sternum and exited just in front of the rear ham. He was done but we put another one in him to speed up the process. I was super excited about the bull but almost as excited about this video. Benjie had enough time to record it all on his iPhone.
