CRAZY Hypothetical Medical Question - Optional Amputation

This may very well be the craziest post I ever make here on TBH! It's a bit of a read, but I'd love to hear some opinions from the masses.

    **Disclaimer**
I understand completely that there are folks here struggling MUCH worse than I am, so please know I'm not trying to draw any sympathy, but rather wanting to know 'What would YOU do?' if you were in my place.

A little over a year ago, I started having pretty significant trouble with my left foot. I was born with extremely flat feet, and my left foot has been getting worse and worse since I was about 25. Long story (somewhat) short, after a few weeks of increasing pain and discomfort, I woke up one morning and couldn't put any weight on my left foot. Every time I tried, it felt like the bones in the top of my foot would snap. After seeing a specialist and having a bunch of x-rays, we discovered that over the years the bones in my foot had fused, and apparently the fusion/coalition had caused the rest of my foot to shift, and the fusion/coalition was causing everything to really disagree.

Without any 100% solution, I chose to have a surgery that Doc *hoped* would at least alleviate 70% of my pain. I entered into the procedure knowing there was a possibility it wouldn't give me the relief I was hoping for. The biggest trouble however, was that everything was working together to create the perfect storm. My foot issues have caused severe arthritis in my ankle, so both things were working against each other. After the surgery, things were a little better, but nowhere near what I'd hoped. Now, after 13 months, I'm struggling almost as much as I was before the surgery. My daily pain level is higher than I can bear without medication, and I don't want to live like this.

I am at the point where I have a few options, but none are ideal. 1: I can try to find a Doc who would try some injection type stuff in my ankle to see if the pain is really all stemming from there (from what I've heard, this is mainly stuff used on knees, but some Docs are willing to try it on ankles as well). Like my first surgery, there's NO guarantee this will alleviate my pain issue. 2: I can have my foot fully fused, which would *hopefully* alleviate my FOOT pain, but would give me significant mobility limitations (no side-to-side movement). The main issue with this option is that a fusion would transfer significant pressure to my ankle, and the Doc believes that this will make a total ankle fusion immanent. Apparently, having your foot AND ankle fused is a pretty rough deal, and most Docs don't even like to do it because of how limiting and difficult it is.

The third option would be amputation of the foot just above the ankle. I know it sounds crazy, but it's a legitimate option, and is the only guarantee that my pain would be completely gone, and I'd be starting with a "clean slate" using a prosthetic. I've done quite a bit of research on this, and though the expense of a prosthetic is great, the technology in that area these days is incredible.

When we discussed this, my Doc was VERY intent on telling me this was NOT his suggestion, but it was truly an option given all the negative possibilities of the situation. I really trust this Doc and feel like he's an excellent surgeon. I was really shocked at first to even be discussing it, but the longer I think on it, the more I wonder if it should be something I really do consider. At this point, I'm nowhere near a decision, but just thinking a lot about all the above options, as well as the option of just living on medication and fighting through the remaining pain.

So there it is. What do you guys think?

I had back pain so severe I wondered that if the pain would never go away if it would be worth being paralized from the waist down to stop the pain.

Sounds crazy but when you hurt so bad for so long it starts to make sense........

I've had back fusions and wrist fusions so I do know pain. Maybe try the injection first and if that doesn't work then the amputation might be a real option.
I'll pray for you to get relief and make the right decision for you.

I can't empathize with the pain you're dealing with but all I can think is what if you had them take the foot off and the pain didn't go away? Not that it's even remotely an option but I would think that would be totally devastating were it to happen.

I actually had a dream/nightmare about this the other day. My foot was gone, but it was like I was haunted by it or something. I talked to a guy once who had his arm amputated just below the elbow after an accident. He said he'd occasionally have "ghost pains" where he felt like his hand was still there.

I believe it, I have heard others say they can still "feel" their missing limbs. I fractured both my shins last year, leg pain sucks!

Ankle problems lead to knee problems which lead to back problems.... Go get a second and third opinion if you can.

You should talk to Dave. His was amputated and he could give you all the truths of what you need to know. He would be a wealth of information on this subject.

He is an incredible person...he has continued to do amazing things with his prosthetics...and continually amazes/inspires me.

If I were you I would seek a second opinion from a good podiatrist. The one I am thinking of is in Decatur, tx. Dr, Brian carpenter.

I have heard him recommend some radical treatments for his patients. No one wants pain least of all those of us who live with pain for years. I just wishe my friend the foot doctor could do something with my chronic abdominal pain.

Good luck to you friend. Your in my prayers.....

Personally Will....I'd have it chopped off.
I see videos all the time of people doing some incredible stuff with prosthetics on.
And in your case it does sound like a good option

CRAZY Hypothetical Medical Question - Optional Amputation

I've met numerous wounded warriors with prosthetics that have full lives. I've never asked too much detail about specifics, but in general there are quite a few folks who go through numerous surgeries and only after amputation so they start getting around and the surgeries and pain end.

Maybe you could find a program that deals with the prosthetics that could have someone speak to you? Prayers sent. Can't be an easy decision.

Have you tried a Thai massage? There may be some complicated issues with yoru bones but before you go under a knife it may not hurt to try and improvements can be very quick. Just an option.

If I were in your shoes the first thing I would do is get at least 2 more Doctors to look at it. I understand you trust this Dr., but it won't hurt to at least see if others have more options. If the options remain the same I would first try the shot and if that doesn't work I'd go amputation. My Grandpa had his leg amputated when he was near 80 and continued to live a normal life, and at the time his quality of life greatly imoroved.

I've had the injections in my right ankle because it is just basically worn out with old multiple breaks with bone chips floating around in it. It was very painful and the injections have helped a lot. My ankle sends me warning signs when it is time to get off it and I listen to it.

Personally i agree with this gentleman. If it is hurtin you that bad and that consistently then amputation woukd be my answer, living with constant pain sucks and living dependant on pain meds to get bu sucks even worse. The way i look at it is that life is too short to be plagued by things like that and the sooner you get the issue resolved the sooner you can be on the road to recovery and a normal life again..,,,,,and yes I fully believe you can lead a very normal life with the technology of prosthetics these days.

Best of luck with whichever option you choose.
