    Amazing Grace

    Amazing Grace

    Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound!
    That saved a wretch like me!
    I once was lost, but now am found;
    Was blind but now I see.

    In evil long I took delight
    Un-awed by shame or fear;
    ‘Til a new object met my sight
    And stopped my wild career.

    I saw One hanging on a tree,
    In agonies and blood
    Who fixed His languid eyes on me
    As near His cross I stood.

    Sure, never ‘til my latest breath
    Can I forget that look.
    It seemed to charge me with His death
    Though not a word He spoke.

    My conscience owned and felt the guilt,
    And plunged me in despair;
    I saw my sins His blood had shed,
    And helped to nail Him there.

    Alas, I knew not what I did,
    But all my tears were vain;
    Where could my trembling soul be hid, For I the Lord had slain.

    A second look he gave which said,
    “I freely all forgive!
    “This blood is for thy ransom paid,
    “I die that thou mayest live.”

    Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
    And grace my fears relieved;
    How precious did that grace appear
    The hour I first believed.

    Through many dangers, toils and snares
    I have already come.
    ‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
    And grace will lead me home!

    The Lord has promised good to me,
    His word my hope secures;
    He will my shield and portion be,
    As long as life endures.

    Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
    And mortal life shall cease,
    I shall possess within the veil
    A life of joy and peace.

    The earth shall soon dissolve like show,
    The sun forbear to shine,
    But God who called me here below
    Shall be forever mine!

    When we’ve been there ten thousand years
    Bright shining as the sun,
    We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
    Than when we first begun!

              That’s great. It’s a shame that most churches don’t play the old hymns anymore. Those words will tug at your heart.

                I weep every time I hear that song
                Thank you for all the words

                  Right up there with “How Great Thou Art” as the most powerful hymns of all time. It really gives a person an opportunity to reflect on what our life is really all about. Without Christ, we are nothing.

                    One of my favorites. I'm not a fan of the contemporary Christian music that's played in most churches nowadays. It all sounds the same. Unfortunately, you just don't hear the old hymns very often anymore.

                      Love it. When you read all verses the power hits you in the heart. Most of the popular versions just cover the first verse then skip to the eighth, then the last verse. The middle verses are really the most powerful - the gut renching confession of a slave trader who realizes his sin and his need for salvation

                        In this case the original writer converted to Christianity but then maintained his career as a slave trader for another 5-10 years. Not sure how they felt about his hymn.

                          John Newton was also a Calvinist and wouldnt be allowed to preach in 99% of pulpits today and people refuse to hear that God is Sovereign and that you are saved solely by the grace of God.

                            Amen! This is the best version I've ever heard.
