I am looking at buying my wife (well, she is looking at buying) a new car with better MPG since she is about to start back on site working in the next few weeks.
She is really liking the Honda Accord and the Hyundai Sonata. They both offer equivalent room, pretty close on the MPG's... Hyundai offers the better warranty and is a few grand cheaper for comparable trim level BUT Honda holds the better resale value. Any advice from someone who has owned either of these cars? |

My wife has a 2014 Kia Optima. 110,000 miles with no issues. Oil changes, brakes, tires, and battery are the only things we've done.
Not sure on Honda or Sonata, but hers did not come with a spare tire or jack. I bought the spare tire package aftermarket- don't want a flat without a spare. The battery in it is some kind of "smart" battery- only one option and if I remember right it was $250 to replace. |

My cousin drives a Honda Accord with 330K still as a daily driver. if I were in the market for one that's what I would buy.

I bought my wife Honda Accord new in 2013.
Still use it as a commuter with about 180k miles on it. Just changed the tires and oil. My sister in law bought a Sonota new in 2014... Had multiple issues and it left her stranded a few times |

Between those 2, Honda.
I am still not sold on turbo charged gas motors and cvt transmissions. Therefore, we went with the Toyota Camry. |

We have a Honda Odyssey and it is the best built vehicle I’ve ever owned. I’ve also been in a wreck with. Hyundai rental car. The crumple zone did what it was supposed to do but the amount of styrofoam and plastic that were exposed was not comforting.

Ive had Hondas in the past. We recently traded Santa Fe for the new Sonora. We love it. Lots of room, great on gas. We also like the 60k mile everything covered warranty. We had a fender fall off because of a mishap. They replaced it for free, no questions asked. I like both but Honda may have better resale value

My money is on Honda but you can’t knock the Hyundai for what you get.

My wife had a 2016 Sonata that was the biggest piece of **** I've ever owned. Car was whatever the highest trim level was (Platinum maybe?) so was very comfortable but constantly in the shop, constant oil leaks/burning oil. Over a year worth of taking it to the shop every month for "monitoring" before they finally replaced the head which still didn't fix it. Car was burning a quart per 1k miles. As soon as they fixed it the last time and I saw it was already a quart low again 1000 miles later I traded it in.

I had a Sonata for 12 years. Drove it as far as NYC and crossed the country on long trips 5-6 times. It had the electric window controller replaced under warranty.
Total I have bought 4 Hyundais and had for a total of about 20 years. The controller, two headlights and a radio were the fixes needed. Last edited by tvc184; 04-08-2021 at 02:57 PM. |

You should also consider the Toyota Camry as well. We had a 2008 Camry with 285k miles on it and the only non-maintenance repair I did on it was a fuel pump at 280k.
My daughter has it now and is approaching or over 300k miles on it and still going strong. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Either brand get the 2.0 turbo accord or the 2.5 turbo sonata. They are both running low 5s 0-60. Shocking what fwd commuter cars can do these days

We have a 2014 Sonata that's been a good car. So far, nothing other than routine maintenance.
Been teen driven the last year and 1/2. I figure it must be an ok car to handle that. |

We started to buy an Accord last time but test drove a late model one and it was the roughest, cheapest feeling car I've ever driven. Moved over to a Hyundai Genesis sedan and is the best car we've ever owned so far. Won't find a much smoother ride either, and quiet inside.
I've never really hear much negative on any Hyundai's. |

I don't think enough can be said about the quality and longevity of the major Japanese auto brands. I've driven Toyota products for years. At 100K miles, they're just hitting their stride. At 300K miles, they still feel like they did when you drove them off the lot. Their resale value is generally petty good, too.

If you plan to keep it long term, and you're hard on vehicles... Honda or Toyota. Hands down.
If you're someone who puts tons of miles on cars and rotates them out every couple years, you'll probably have ok luck with the Hyundai too |

Haha. Let me guess...Chevy guy? It’s all fun and games until the GM hits 100k miles. My Tundra will still have the new truck smell at 100k.

Wife had a 2016 accord sport. Nice loooking car and lots of leg room. The trunk is huge as well.
Traded it in for an 18 Accord sport. Looked even nicer with just as much room inside. Both avg 30-32 mpg. Nothing against Hyundai, that’s just my experience. |

If I bought a half ton this year it would probably be a tundra. If they go turbocharged after this year, I am out. I do find it funny tbh tundra owners have no issues, but folks I know that own one don’t think it’s anything special. None have bought another tundra after initial purchase. |

Toyota. Last as long as the Honda and seems like service is less expensive.

Car manufacturers have came a long way. They all have their issues. All makes and models will go the distance if taken care of. Go drive them for a day each. Do your regular routine of grocery shopping, bank etc. Whichever one fits your but best and needs best wins the ticket.

I appreciate the input guys. I know I have heard that Hyundai cars have gotten a lot better rap over the last decade. My wife chooses cars by how they look, I try to even that out by thinking about longevity and dependability. She likes the looks of the Accord and Sonata so that's why this question was raised. I wasn't sure if Hyundai had come to forefront as a contender in last few years...
While considering her "cute" requirement I am trying to make the best purchase we can! |
