Default How safe is Mexico?

Thinking about booking a trip to Cancun for Memorial Weekend and staying at a resort close to the airport. Wife's having second thoughts on how safe it will be since we haven't been in 10 years.... anybody been lately and how safe would/did you feel going?

I’ve gone every year for at least 15 years. I’d say much safer than Chicago or Detroit. Don’t go look for trouble and it won’t find you

We go every year also and have never had any trouble. We don't venture out at night and stay on resort most of the time. The excursions we have had, have good reviews through trip advisor.

Been countless times and have booked this year taking my kids (7&3). Never an issue. Like said above don’t look for trouble and you won’t find any. Offered drugs a few times, but just said no thanks and off they go. Just a way of life, they don’t want bad attention so I’ve never felt the slightest uneasy.

Have fun

We also go every year. We take a private charter from the airport to our resort and have never had an issue or felt unsafe at any time. Statistically it's much safer than driving thru any big us city at night on the bad side of town. Like others said don't go looking for trouble and you will be fine.

Barcelo Maya Palace! It is first class. Not cheap but very very nice. It's down past playa del Carmen. Lots of sea turtles that will swim right up to you and pretty good snorkeling right at the resort.

The Mexican government protects the tourist cities. They want the money coming in. The drug lords protect the cities because they want the money coming in. I have been to several and always felt safe. Just don't go outside the main streets.

My wife always talked about Mexico and beach vacations since she went after high school to an all inclusive wedding. I've never left the USA and would only for Canada and Scotland (I WILL tour Ardbeg and Lagavulin before I die) but we went to san francisco last year, and that's about as dangerous as we will get. lol

Granted its been two years, we had armed guards at our resort. Definitely didn't feel safe. I won't go back any time soon, because safety was clearly an issue. If I google Cancun and Murder there are dozens of stories just form this year (Including tourist areas), Mexico also refuses to stop facilitating migrants from central america from coming to the USA illegally. Not to mention it's a known problem of the resorts serving home-made booze mixed with rubbing alcohol that is killing people.

Personally, I felt far safer and received better hospitality in numerous other counties that have a supposed high crime rate.

Well I think what he's tryn to get at is if you have direct control over something like spending your tourism dollars don't spend it on a chithole country like Mexico.

totally safe!
just got back a few days ago from Cancun.

no armed guards. no guys running around killing people.
beaches were totally safe, tourists everywhere enjoying the sun and water.

Went fishing, caught barracuda, amberjack, sailfish.
Tequila tasting tour.
Catamaran ride to Isla mujeres.
snorkeling.

stayed at Paradisus - all inclusive. First class place. The workers there are super friendly. I was pouring myself some coffee, then out of no where waiter shows and says
No senor! I'll pour the coffee for you. You are on vacation. You relax and enjoy.

now that is what I'm talking about. Guarantee you won't get this level of service in U.S.A

Go. If you don't, you'll be kicking yourself later.

The good looking European and Australian chicks I've talked to at the dive shop in Xcalak have always been fine. I'm talking smoking hot 20-25 year old Swedish girls that hike, bike, hitchhike and bus their way up and down the Riviera for weeks or months. If they can do that I think you'll be fine in a resort.

I have a coworker that owns a place there. He got caught in the middle of some nonsense over the Christmas/ New Years holiday. Said he is going to get rid of his place and probably will only go back to finish paperwork. I guess it could happen anywhere. I’ve been to plenty of places and it is far from the safest place I have been. If your looking for a Caribbean vacation I seem to feel a lot better on Islands with French or British background. Islands also seem to have a different feeling as far as locals goes

No longer go to boys town or bars in the city at night...not that I ever did of course.

My thoughts too. Safe or not wouldn't matter. I wouldn't go if she's not feeling it.

Plenty of places to go anyway that aren't supporting a corrupt Country. I have buddies that hunt down there and carry cash in their pockets just for bribes when the cops pull them over...no thanks.

This is really my only concern since we're not gonna leave the resort at anytime except to and from the airport... she suggested the Atlantis in Nassau but it's not inclusive and I have NO CLUE how much food and alcohol would cost the two of us down there for 4 days. (we've stayed at the Sandals in Nassau and she's been to the Atlantis before, it's just hard to figure out a budget on food and alcohol for the two of us since she can't remember any prices except one breakfast meal that cost her over $100)

I'll be in Nassau this summer and have been to Atlantis several times. I find Atlantis overpriced and over hyped though worth a visit. Of these choices I go to Tulum every time cause I like the funky. Certainly don't find that area any more dangerous than Nassau

Cancun has a sharp rise in Narco activity that has been skirting the edges of the resort community...you can google 'borderlandbeat cancun' if you want to see the various articles. It is not a work / family friendly site.

Actually its been this way through most of Mexico's resort cities...nothing I have read where they are bothering tourists within the heart & think you will be fine. I personally would spend my money elsewhere & am disappointed the direction my beloved mexico is turning. I wish the people would take their country back. Getting worse and this new president is a first class ding-bat.

Mexico is like the pitbull of countries. It's perfectly fine and safe until it isn't, but you sure as hell don't want to be there when it becomes "isn't".

We go to Playa all the time and love it. Last year I sent my wife and 8 of her friends for my wife's 40th. Some of the girls were worried about the safety, I just made fun of them because at the time I was in a remote part of Kenya that was not safe. Anyway, They all went with no issue but when they got there the house that I rented for them had a broken front door. The maid went on to tell them a story about the people that were there the previous week. They took a cab from the airport to the house(bad idea) and the cab driver and others came back later, broke in the door, and took them at gunpoint to an atm to get money then returned them to the home unharmed. Be careful, don't wear flashy rings and watches, and for the love of God do not use the taxi cabs.

We just returned from St Maarten, the Dutch side. Wonderful Beaches. Friendliest people in the world. No armed soldiers at the airport. A little further flight than Mexico, but absolutely beautiful water.
