You can stump spray or spray from 18" and down all the way around the trunk with a mix of Triclopyr (Remedy, etc) and diesel. Smooth bark can be as low as 15% triclopyr and 85% diesel and rougher bark needs to be upwards of 25% triclopyr. This can be done at any time of the year.

Timing is key when spraying the leaves and do not use diesel as it will burn the leaves off before it absorbs the chemical. Mix it with water and triclopyr, I believe that is 1% but isn't as effective.

Now is about the time to spray the leaves but with the droughty conditions, the leaf spray isn't the best method.

There are two types of mixes for spraying Tryclopir (Remedy).

Foliar Spraying - 2.5%-3.5% in water. Suggest using a Surfactant as well. Spray green foliage, completely.

Basal Spraying -15%-18% in diesel. Completely spray the bottom 18" of the trunk. This can be done nearly year-round, but not in the dead of Winter.

I killed thousands this year. Cut off at ground and sprayed stumps with Remedy & diesel.
Spraying just the stump means no standing dead mesquite and does not require large amounts of poison or diesel. I use a 1/2 gallon sprayer. Corona curved limb loppers or battery chainsaw for small stuff. One person cutting and one spraying is time efficient

2.5 Cups - Triclopyr 4 ($73.50 per gal on amazon)
mix with 1 Gal - diesel

Has always worked well for me on mesquites.

Wish ya'll weren't so quick, to put such toxins on the ground..
And eventually, into the ground water..
There are always organics, that work just as well..
Perhaps, you should try drilling a bunch of holes in the stump,
and put Blackstrap molasses in the holes. Cover with a weighted black
              trash bag.
              Just a thought..

Diesel is an effective carrier for Remedy, but methylated seed oil works too. There are also water-soluble options like Garlon3a.

As others have said, don’t spray diesel on leaves.

Wow. I killed thousands of mesquites this year. That is a lot of molasses and weighted plastic bags.

BTW which is the before and after photos of that lake?
