Well, I have been kicking the tires for the last five years on booking my first western big game hunt and I finally decided to pull the trigger before I was too old to be able to meet the physical demands of a hunt like this. My expectations going into this New Mexico public land hunt were a combination of the unknown that comes along with hunting a different part of the county and the excitement of what could possibly happen if one of these majestic creatures happened to cross my path in archery range.
I can tell you that this was by far the most enjoyable and most demanding hunting experience I have ever had in my over 35 years in this sport. This guy screamed in my face at 15 steps and after a 2 minute stand off he presented me with a 12 yard shot. I always wanted the experience of hunting archery elk during the rut and also the experience of packing out an animal of this magnitude to test my physical capabilities. Well I certainly got what I asked for as this guy came to rest 2.5 miles from the truck. We started the cleaning and packing process at 7:30am and finished the last pack out at 9pm with over 15 miles logged. I was physically exhausted and emotionally spent at the end of this hunt, but it is safe to say I’m completely hooked on chasing these giants. Taking this bull on public land makes it all that more special! Sorry for the long read and hope you enjoy the pics!
