Default Bowhunting with FFF Safaris

Well Robert and Dwight Furgenson arrived ar Johannesburg International Airport at 21:30 last week Saturday.

We drove straight to the concession and finally settled down for a couple of hours of sleep.

Sunday morning was relaxed having breakfast, checking the bow is still shooting where it’s supposed to after the long travels and a game drive throughout the concession.

Robert shoots a PSE Stealth II with Valkyrie 200gr broad heads.

Sunday afternoon we got to our first session in the blind getting them used to what needs to be done and what not in a blind when animals are less than 20 yards away.

Just before sunset they got treated by a Southern Less Galago that came to drink water, I have never seen them on the ground while its still light.

On the way to camp we saw Matebele Ants returning from a raid on a termite mount returning with the spoils of war.

Monday found us in an elevated hide and it was not long before the effects of the long travels caught up with them ...

But it did not take much to get Robert ready to shoot.

We came close to getting it done on a good Nyala bull on Monday late afternoon.

Tuesday found us early at a favorite pit blind of mine and we where just getting settled when an Impala ram was less than 10 yards from the hide, soon after the Cape Buffalo came in and left after drinking.

Around 13:00 a magnificent kudu bull stepped out and Robert let the Valkyrie fly at 25 yards, the bull made about 20 yards before going down with a well placed heart shot. The bull measured 53,5 inches, great way for a first time hunter to Africa to open his account.

To tell you the truth I am impressed with these Valkyrie broad heads, broke the shoulder bone on entry, full penetration and broke rib on exit. No damage to the broad head and still sharp enough for Robert to get a cut on the finger when we got back to camp.

Late afternoon we were spoiled by a Brown Hyena that walked right past the hide at 5 yards, again a special sighting in daylight.

Wednesday found us at an elevated hide battling with the gusting wind, very nice Nyala bull came in but then moved before getting a shot opportunity and that sets the tone for the day with warthog, impala and gemsbuck.

The Nyala came in for a 2nd and 3rd time but made the mistake on the 3rd time to stand quartering away at 28 yards and Robert let another Valkyrie fly.
The Nyala went 75 yards before piling up.

Today finds us in another elevated hide with a cold front starting to move in, hopefully we will get a shot at a gemsbuck or Blue Wildebeest today, tomorrow we will be doing a photo safari to the Pilaansberg Park.

Stay tuned...

Starting to warm up quickly and a few waterbuck cows and young bulls,

Then the Gemsbuck came in and started dominating the area.

Robert let the Valkyrie fly and the Gemsbuck was down in 50 yards...

Today I am getting my hunters out of the blinds and taking them on a wildlife photo session in the Pilaansberg Park, there is so much more to hunting to be experienced than sitting in a blind.
Today we hunt the Big 5 with the cameras.

should be a great trip. I've done that. Photo safaris are fun, just not quite as much as shooting them with the bow . Post up some camp pics. Especially of the food . Love the grilled meat over there. Can't wait to get back and have a Castle and grilled Kudu.

Good luck to the hunters.

This morning we are in one of the pit blinds again and its been very busy from early on.

Kudu bull came in and came and stood 5 yards from the hide and walked past so close I could have slapped him on the bum

Great looking Nyala bull

Sorry about the poor quality of the photos used the IPhone while in the hide,

Now we wait for impala or blue wildebeest to come in and drink...

Quick draw shot at a blacked backed jackal, happened so fast did not even press record.

Hair flied on the shot, waiting for last light and those sneaky big Blue Wildebeest to cone and make a mistake then we will go check on the jackal

This morning we are off to a quick start with Impala coming in 30 odd minutes after we are in the hide. As the last day of a hunt should start

Robert sent the Valkyrie on its way and it hit the ram perfectly quartering away sending the ram on a death run, pumping blood all the way.

Wind changed and I called in the truck, stopped at camp for a quick coffee and got into another hide better situated for the wind conditions.

It was again not more than 20 minutes and we have three nice Impala relaxed around the hide.

Great decoys for the blue wildebeest and warthog we have left on the hit list...

Good morning,

Been busy the last few days.

a Big Blue Wildebeest bull came in just before light become too bad for shooting.

Unfortunately the animal moved at the shot and the arrow hit 1.5 inches low, started off with a good blood trail but as it became dark the blood became less and less.

The tracking team followed the bull for probably 2 miles in the dark in the thick brush found the last spots of blood and had to call it.

Not a nice way to finish the hunt but if you hunt long enough you will know things goes wrong sometimes and you wound and you need to do your best to find the animal.

I have no doubt that the bull will survive and once I have the video edited of the hunt I will share it here.

Monday we visited the Marekele National Park.

Yesterday was the travel day with a drive north to south again through the Pilanesberg Park with close encounters with elephant and white rhino, taking the trophies to the taxidermy and visiting a shop to buy trinkets before I treated then to the final traditional meal and dropped them off at the airport.

Just to give you an idea of the quality of the kudu and other sculls.
