Default Kayote outfitters Nilgai

Has anyone been hunting with kayote outfitters? Have a Nilgai hunt booked for February 16-17 and taking my bow. Seems to have great reviews. Hunt will be around Port Mansfield

I saw just the one I killed on the first night. It was late in the crop land season and the farmers had cut the fields the week before I went due to an incoming storm. He is good at getting you on them though. I got about 75 yards away with a 300 win mag. I’m sure you could get closer if your hunting at night with thermals. Good times.

THE Best Nilgai guide in Texas in my opinion!!! Barrera had hunted then since he was a kid. This hunt is not canned and you will work your arse off for it, or it may just happen,. I went down on 2 different occasions last year. Awesome hunt!!

I believe he runs different prices for different types of hunts. We are doing the night thermal hunt in crop fields and was a special at $1250.

Cancelled our hunt today with him. Things IMO just weren't adding up with him. Number of places, acreage, hunters always changed and really couldn't get some straight answers out of the guy. I know a lot of people have had great experiences with him, but too many red flags for me....

The guy has a lot of places to hunt. Just go down there and he will put you on the nilgai. He has a couple guides that work for him.

When I booked, he stated he was only offering 5 night time crop hunts for the period of April-May-June. When I booked in December, he only had one spot left. Yesterday he runs same add for another 5 hunts same type and time period and says "I sell them when I get them". Texted back and forth and never could get any real straight answers as to how many hunters and acreage we would be hunting. First it was 15 fields, then it was 3 fields and lastly our field. Said we could hunt about 1,000 acres. If the guy wants to sell hunts that's fine, but when you advertise and say you are only doing 5 hunts, don't sell 10 or however many more he might can sell.

Heís a very well known, highly regarded Nilgai guide thatís very easy to find information on. Very high success rate. Heís also the lowest price Iíve seen anywhere.

If you canít get comfortable with him, I donít think this is your game.

So you don't think what Hawkpuppy1 said is a legitimate concern? I agree the guide has a good reputation, but if he's telling potential clients two or three different things i can understand him questioning it. It's different if you already know the guide. From a knew client perspective I can understand the concerns

Really? You get mad because he ends up selling a few more hunts so he can have more work? Youíre going for a one time hunt, not a season pass so what does it matter how many more he wants to do?

A.C. I have personally stayed at the man's house. I know his family just had a baby and he's been very busy. Neck I even offered the man a tip for the hunt and he refused it, lol. He has grown up in the valley and has alot of relationships with the land owners. Also has an outstanding Mexican food restaurant in Harlingen. I wouldn't vouch for someone if they were not worth it....

I donít think itís really any of his business how many hunts the guy sells. If he wants to drum up business via a ďlast chanceĒ promotion, heís not exactly unique in that approach. Furthermore, he may not truly know. The places Iíve Nilgai hunted were overrun with them. Iíd imagine he gets new invites from places he works to sell hunts all the time and doesnít necessarily know how many heíll offer in a given time frame.

Finally, heís known as a low-cost provider. $1k for a bull is basement. If youíre trying to do something on the cheap, you shouldnít expect to dictate a whole lot. Everyone thatís been with him has had glowing reviews (that Iíve seen), so on a cheap hunt, that should be enough.

Probably best for both parties that the hunt was canceled. Other options out there, move on and pick another.

Super interested in hunting Nilgai and booking with Kayote. I haven't tried calling them yet. I have tried email & facebook messenger with no replies.

For those that have hunted with them, are phone calls the only way they communicate?

I realize that an outfitter can be great at everything but communication, and still be great.

On the other hand, if the only communication you have with an outfitter is verbal, there is no record of anything - Which does make it a little harder to pick/trust that outfitter, eh?

Every Nilgai mount I've seen look almost identical. What makes these things a trophy? I'd like to get one for the meat, but not sure if it's worth mounting an animal that looks just like everyone else's. Are there characteristics that make one a trophy over another?
