    Question for Goat Ranchers

I stopped off in the Coopers in Llano Sunday for a bite to eat on my way home from the lease. I noticed that goat was $32/pound. My question to goat producers is....have the prices you are getting at the sale barn also gone up?

For those curious, I passed on the goat, despite liking it very much.

Here' some Colorado sale info in case you're interested: https://mymarketnews.ams.usda.gov/fi...1899_00156.pdf

We bought a slaughter goat from a friend of ours 2 years ago for about $60 I think. He told us he took some to the sale, listed above, the next year and got 4x$ what we paid him.
He also said there were some pretty sorry looking goats and the auctioneer commented how his were the best lot of the sale, hence the high price.

Goat is great, ours was about 60-75 lbs I think live weigh. Smoked most of it and it was terrific. Lots of our friends got to try goat for the first time and liked it.

We bought our goat live and the friend helped us dispatch it how he liked to do it, throat slit. We processed it ourselves.
I'd go to the source if you want one.

I heard from a big rancher this week that prices had plummeted from last years high

Everyone here says more money in meat goats than “regular” cattle.

Goats and sheep will make lots more money than cattle. Cattle are kind of a weekend warrior type thing. Sheep and goats are much more labor intensive. Predators are a much larger problem with sheep and goats.

Sounds like I need to unload a few of my goats!

They are high and yes they will bring more money/lb than beef. I’ve been growing my herd and next year I plan to sale a few for the first time. It’s definitely been a journey on learning how to raise those sensitive suckers in a wet climate but we are finally getting the hang of it.
