Yep I’d be pi$$3d too. Last year my co workers daughter took a Texas A&M folder to school. The teacher took it and gave her a yellow one. Her reasoning was, she did not not want to offend the other students who’s parents could not afford the Texas folders.

Texas gets more like California every day. When we lose Texas we have lost the USA and we will be at that point soon.

What is crazy is that in all actuality there are very few students in each class who's families can't afford school supplies. If they would just budget a little better, give up their new iPhone, turn off cable and stop going out to dinner every night they'd be able to spend $$$ on things that are needed. Then it wouldn't be a burden on the rest of the class if the supplies were only being shared with the kids that REALLY needed it.
Sorry OP. I have a first and third grader. I understand.

My wife is a teacher, and the teachers union does not do a dang thing to help teachers. My son is 22 now so its been a while since he was that young. I ask my wife if this happened to our son and she said yes!!! I should have payed more attention.

I would start with the principal vs the teacher. That may be a policy that the teacher had no control over.

Protect teachers from ****ty parents. My step mom retired a few years ago, but more than a few parents tried to sue her for what amounts to making their kids feel bad for their own actions in the classroom.

Then when the parents came in to complain to her about how she made their kids feel bad, she told them they were doing a bad job of being parents (She put it much more eloquently). She was sued shortly after that. Teachers union managed all of it, and she didn't have to come out of pocket a dime, and the ****ty parents didn't get a dime.

Yep. And does ANYONE really believe that in today's society.economy parents can't afford to feed their kids? They choose to spend the money elsewhere. Sure I'm sure a TBH resident liberal can find an example but lets all agree that 99% could afford it.

BTW - They push it because it's ALL about the money

18 years...I promise you are over 10k by now. My wife teaches first grade. After year 3 I made her write down every penny she spent. I simply wanted to prove that it adds up to at lot more than +/- $300 she claimed... After just a couple months she just admitted it and stopped adding it up LOL

It's 100% Bullsh@# when the school knows any teacher with decency will be forced to use their own money so they simply don't supply what's needed. Yet as mentioned above there's never a shortage for all kinds of BS and unwated worthless programs.

I know some will say all kids deserve supplies etc ( and I agree ) but it teaches the kids the wrong lesson. Work harder and you will be penalized by paying for the others stuff. Dont work and someone else will provide for you.
I could imply lots of things.... But for anyone who's never been through this just go to the 1st day of school and see who just happens to bring in supplies and who did not. I did this once and it's so obvious before the parents mouths even start moving it made me want to punch them in the face.

They make it clear at LISD that all supplies go in big bins and the teacher divides to the kids... So all kids get equal blah blah

They all have a cell phone but some can't bring in $10 in supplies.

BTW - we have kids that live in 300k+ homes on free/reduced lunches. Figure that one out!

Yep. My wife has been an elementary or middle school teacher for about 8 years and we have spent tons of money on decorations, supplies, and various other items to aid the teacher in teaching the students. Teachers receive no help purchasing these things and are out of pocket a lot of money every year. I'm really not sure how many supplies we have personally bought for kids that were without. I understand the OP's frustration. It's possible though that maybe the situation isn't what it seems. I would definitely speak to the teacher to clarify what's being done.

Depends on where one lives but I'd wager about ZERO families here actually can't afford supplies. I just wish someone was stupid enough to wager me lots of money on a bet like this.

This is correct. It REALLY can make school bad for smart kids who are bored to tears. The kids with parents who care could be a lot further along come HS. So much so it's sickening. I'm amazed more people can't see this and they should be outraged by it.

agreed. I also am married to a teacher (kindergarten) and I have spents THOUSANDS of dollars of MY hard earned money for the kids in her classroom over just the past 8 years and I have the receipts to prove it. (business expenses for "office supplies", dontchaknow. I'll help out but I'm not paying taxes on it too. lol)
If the list said a specific color and you deviated, I cannot side with you on this. If it was a "free choice" folder, then something is messed up.
Does her teacher not have an email? My oldest is in 1st grade at the same school my wife teaches at and we get emails almost DAILY from the 1st grade teacher about what happened, what to expect, upcoming homeworks, and if there is anything child specific, the lines of communication are wide open from day one in both lanes.

You definitely need to talk to the teacher to see what happened, but for the love of the Lord, don't go in all hostile. So many of you on here are bashing the teachers but they dont make the system they just work in it.
And you better think long and hard about arguing that statemtn with me if you have ever once said "I support the troops" or the "thin blue line."

Teachers deal with 20+ punk *** children all day long and the younger ones are just plain WILD for the first 1/3 of the year. Blame the parents all you want, and SOMETIMES the teachers mess up but I assure you, 90% of them are doing what is best for your kid.
Unless you are an unnecessarily hostile parent with a sheethead kid in which case you should reevaluate your own place in life. (not speaking to you directly, OP, just in general.)

Being the socialist democrap libtard that I am I figured some in my kid's class would not be able to afford supplies so I bought extra
As in, I bought enough for the entire class
Everything
Everything on the list I bought times thirty
It was a few hundred bucks thanks to Amazon prime day and Walmart back to school sale (25 cents for a pack of crayons, etc)
But the pencils I had custom made with our family crest on it.
500 fat kid's pencils
End of the first week the teacher sent an email asking for more supplies and specifically pencils
Pointed it out to the wife and she said, "let it go..."
So I just went about it here on tbh

I figure spending a few hundred on supplies is cheaper than sending my kid to Kincaid or AWTY so I'm still far ahead.

The trading school supplies thing is a complete joke and a no go in my books.

As far as helping teachers with supplies I am all for that and do not mind chipping in one bit to make the classroom look better and help them out as the do a ton for the kids in a system that is rough.

Also, I can't imagine trying to be a teacher and dealing with 20-40 sets of parents at a time.... You guys and girls that are teachers are tough and doing great work!

My wifes an elementary teacher. At the school she teaches it's a policy that's enacted by the higher ups. She hates the socialist bs but the second the parent that didn't buy **** comes up and cries about something a new policy is made.

It starts with school supplies and ends up with the guy at the deer lease who brings a warm 6 pack of Keystones and then proceeds to drink a case of the good cold beer from someone else's cooler. he wonders why nobody drinks any of the warm Stones.

Well with 2 teacher income in our family. Elementary school is a whole different animal than middle or high school is.

My kids are in 1st and 2nd grade. When we brought our supplies to school on meet the teacher, they all went into big bins for the class. As long as the kids have what they need to do their work, then I am happy.

Yes my wife teaches elementary and I teach highschool. I have been teaching either Ag or Welding for the last 14 years. Yes it sucks that every year it seems my budget gets cut, and the football team gets new uniforms. I could be ****** about it everyday if I wanted to---I have to choose to be here for the kids and teach them something that will help them the rest of their lives. My wife has spent lots of money on her room, goodies for the kids and so on. Yes I wish she didn't, but those are "her" kids and thats what she does for them. She has gotten better about spending our money, but it still happens.

Teaching is the easy part of our profession. There is no teacher shortage---There is a shortage of people that will put up with all the BS that they keep adding to us. Ask any teacher how much time they spend during the day taking care of "non teaching" things.

My wife teaches 2nd grade they do the put all supplies together and even distribute, her schools emphasized standard color folders to help prevent your case From happening I understand your frustration, buy your child nice things you want them to enjoy them but I promise her teacher has way more to worry about and focused on than making sure everyone get their exact folder.

!

Do you all realize that cellphone companies give iPhones away for "free" so that's not a good indicator of disposable income?
I have given old phones away.
My job requires me to have a phone so I have the iPhone 11 coming and two perfectly fine iPhone 10 I can give away to whoever wants them.

Stop judging books by their cover

Wait until about the end of the first week and then get what your child needs and write their name on it multiple places with a permanent marker

We never fell for that crap after the first time they pulled it

If kids need school supplies then let the school district buy them
If they can spend millions on stadiums, indoor practice fields and all that other stuff that is not necessary for education then they can buy school supplies easily

If I know of a family that is in need I will gladly contribute to help their kids get the necessities though

I always wrote my kids name on all school supplies I sent to school with them. Everything! One year a teacher asked to not put names on anything. I informed her that I paid for them with MY money, they items belonged to MY child, I could put My kids name in them. She kept her stuff.
