I try to plant right before a rain and pray the hogs don’t find the seed before it sprouts. I plant oats and rye in the fall but I wait till it’s up a couple of inches and then fertilize.
When you say you mow it, what is there to mow to start? Do you disc it right to clean dirt?
We have an area of existing hay pasture that we want to plant food plots and I'm curious on the best way to do this. Right now the grass is a few feet tall.

I would guess you need to spray the grass and kill it.

Then no till drill seeds in

Then you could mow dead grass to be your thatch and help retain moisture

      I could be wrong
