How can you tell if the animal died from anthrax by seeing the carcass?? What to look for?

I too hunt off of 189 (south side) and I witnessed the same thing last weekend. Two deer (1 WT & 1 Axis) the entire weekend. Many of the game cams showed zero deer after June 24th and my deer vanished July 12th. I literally had 250 pounds of protein sitting inside my Lamco trough. Corner the roads for two days with no action.

I would guess a fully intact body, not ate up by predators or scavengers, and multiples of such is a pretty decent indicator

How far down 189 from 277 is your place Taco? We know JFritz place has anthrax and their place is 18 miles down 189 from 277. Just trying to get a feel how far it is spreading along 189. thanks for your info!

Northeast Kinney Co here. Was there this weekend. We seem to be anthrax free as of right now but looking really dry. Got a good rain last overnight. Not sure how much.

I received .08 this morning. At less that’s what my weather station said, it felt nice and cool having breakfast on the porch.

Is there any website that has confirmed cases pinpointed on a map? I've seen the traditional triangle map but I would like to see one of the exact locations and see how close it is to our place.

Man that sucks bad. If there's a bright side you can take your boat with the new transom out fishing all winter! It's usually great! Just fix them 2 folks in Arp a sack lunch for the days your gone!

I haven't heard anything dead on our place but there was 2 dead goats at the gate when we pulled up but who knows if that was anthrax or goats busy looking for a place to die.

I think we need some rain but not too much. I chatted with feed store owner at Speer Ag in Uvalde Saturday and he suggested that rain would be good. He mentioned that the ground cracks open during drought and exposes anthrax spores that were buried. Rain keeps the ground from cracking open.

But once the ground is cracked open, heavy, drought-breaking rains during an outbreak will cause rapid plant growth. The plants will grow in those cracks bring the anthrax spores up out of the ground where the famished animals will consume them. Seems to me like some rain, but not too much, and cool weather is what we need. That and the grace of God. Lets pray this outbreak ends quickly.

About 25 miles south of Ozona -- went out to check feeders and cameras yesterday. I didn't see any dead deer, but the corn was piling up under the feeders, so I turned them off. Didn't see any deer on the cameras. I guess I'll go back out 2nd weekend in September to look at cameras again, to assess filling / turning on the feeders.

Is anyone rally going to burn a deer carcass?
If it died from anthrax I don't want to get close to it.
For every one you find there are several you won't find.
If you go burning something out west you might start a huge brushfire.

If there were enough spores to infect that deer even burning it won't take care of the original source.

I think just leave them laying where they are.

I'm curious on how you are determining your estimated total dead loss?

It is just our guess from spending almost everyday searching for bodies, spending years and years on the ranch, trail cameras, observations. It may be way more and probably will not know how bad it is until cool weather and deer season.

I was down in Brackettville last weekend. So far we have not found any dead or have seemed to have lost any on our place. It has gotten really dry in the last month and the deer are hitting the protein feeders hard. Trying to keep them full to minimize them eating other sources that might be contaminated.
Did talk to a high fence place that has lost over 300k in exotics so far. I won't go into detail on how they are burning the dead. You have to really feel for those ranches.
The one interesting thing I learned is you don't want to keep a head/antlers of an animal that has died from it. You are ok with sheds but I might think twice about a dead skull I find in the future. Not sure if there is a time period on this.
The herds will come back but you have to really feel for the guys that have been managing a property and putting the work in to let their animals reach a harvesting age to find out a large portion is wiped out. Also the uncertainty of not know if this will last all the way to September or not.

My business partner has a little over 1k acres off of Aldwell Rd. south of Sonora. High fenced place and he's wiped out.

Finding tons of dead wt, axis, black buck and fallow. Feeders aren't getting hit, the corn is piled up, cotton seed and minerals are untouched. No wt seen during daylight or night while spotlighting. A few exotics seen here and there. He's been down there 4 days and he said it's a ghost town and smells rotten.

It's a bad deal for everyone.

Just talked to an Ole Boy who hunts the same ranch but different pasture and they counted 37 dead wt driving the road... Evidently the LO isn't letting the lease members know the severity. Hope my reports are not as grave as what I'm hearing... Sad
