Trapping season is upon us once again.
It's time to knock the rust off those traps and get some steel in the ground. Post up your catches, sets, strategies, and anything else trapping related. This fall I had the opportunity to do a little early season coyote trapping. The first three days produced fourteen coyotes. One of three doubles on the first morning’s check with 14 sets. Day one pila double. This area produced eleven coyotes in three days with fourteen traps. Two third night catches out of the three sets here. No more fawns for this old timer. This male fell for a big dirt hole on the first night. Last edited by TUCO; 11-06-2017 at 03:44 PM. |

I've always thought the look on a yotes face when caught in a trap was: " ****, I hate that you had to see me like this ".
As opposed to a bobcat which says: " Just make one slip-up and I'll rake your *** up one side and down the other ". ![]() |

TUCO, how do you set your traps?
Honestly mine are still sitting out since last year. I will pop them a few times and then set them. I always use domestic dog droppings as the bait. I sometimes put a little female coyote in heat scent on a stick next to the droppings. I have never done the dirt hole. My land is pretty flat and I don't have any humps to dig a hole into. |

Tuco, sounds like you've been putting in the work. Congrats on thinning out the fawn killers. I've done a little calling and killed one. That will ramp up for the rest of the season. |

Dang. I wouldn't think y'all had that big of a coyote problem and to still have the deer success you have. Looking forward to following this.
What do y'all put in the area to get them near the trap? |

Mark, in January of this year I managed to catch right at five coyotes per square mile. If you add in the coyotes that were killed coming to the call, as well as other misc. rifle kills, that percentage jumped to 8 coyotes per square mile. We actually had an old buck killed within ½ a mile from where these coyotes were caught the day before I started trapping. At dawn the very next morning six coyotes were given a speedy trial, and found guilty as charged. They were sentenced accordingly. ![]() As far as getting them to step on the pan; I set right on the sign, and take the wind into consideration when making my set. Then I let the bait, lure, and MB 550 do the rest. |

Dipped my toe in the water today by setting two bodygrip bucket sets. Might throw out a foothold tomorrow. Mainly out here deer hunting. I usually wait till after opening week of rifle to run a full line on my place.

Probably a dumb question but how do the coyotes act when you come up on them in a trap? They look docile in the pics even though I know that is TOTALLY wrong!

Fur Update 2017-2018
West Texas Bobcat and Coyote shine with more demand! We prefer all our furs green. R-P Outdoors and Lewing Fur Company will buy fur this year. We are a part of Groenewold Network. We will be posting routes on here later. Lewing Fur Company buys fur west of Dallas and most of Arkansas. R-P Outdoors buys fur east of Dallas, all of Louisiana and southwest Arkansas. Coyote-A very hot item on the heavy western upper plains coyote, but now they are looking at some of the pale Coyote of West and Central West Texas at a good price. It may even be a small market for North Louisiana and East Texas Coyote, but a cheap price. No unskinned Coyotes please. Bobcat-Finished up last year on advancing prices and will start off as good as last year. However the further west we go the stronger the cat prices will be. Please note the value of the cat is the white spotted belly. A narrow bellied or smokey bellied cat will not bring much. A cat that is brought in wet or dirty will not bring a good price. We will buy unskinned cats. Bobcat fur primes up after Christmas and most stay good until early March. Beaver-We always have a green hatter market at about $6.00. Beaver Castor-Clean, no oil sacks or fat-$18-$20 per pound green. This will need to be semi thawed so we can grade it. Fatty castor will be much lower! Grey Fox-A little movement this Fall with a very small advance may take place. Western Texas may bring up to $10.00 with easterns up to $7.00. Red Fox-No good news, may bring about the same as Grey Fox. Otter-Our last years Otter was sold below our cost! Prices at this time can only be in the teens. We suggest you trap them, store them and hopefully they could advance later in the year. Mink and Muskrat-Still low prices. Male Mink at $4.00. Louisiana and Texas Muskrat at $2.00. Opossum- 50 cents. Skunk- up to $2.00. Coons-No market. We will stock at about $1.50 average on good stuff. No sales in the past 4 years. Lewing Fur Company 1-318-332-8710 R-P Outdoors you can call our store number, 1-800-762-2706 or at night for fur prices 1-318-872-2377 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Could be a good night, already had a possum come sneaking up looking for leftover cat food. Me, the headlight, and the air rifle could have a sporty night.
