I am not the tracking expert that some people are on here (thinking Sika). But it is easy for me to armchair q-back this, but I read the entire first thread and when I saw that the buck survived the first shot my theory was, with the blood you posted:

High shot, but clipped one lung. You did not hit the gut but with a high shot, if you had there most likely would not have been a smell. Stomach shots rarely smell bad. Large intestine and small intestine could smell if there is material in it. It is possible that these were empty as well, if he had not eaten for several hours, which during the rut is plausible.

It is exciting that you were able to get another chance on him so quickly and he is a fantastic buck. Congrats!

Unfortunately I failed to gut him. Some yellow stuff around the entry and exit so I left the front legs. Took the rear legs and backstraps. I have more pics of the outside of the body cavity of that is helpful? Second arrow went in quartering and got lots of vitals so it would be a challenge to see what did what.
