We've had two calves in the barn since March. American (first time for us) and a black exotic. We're having a ball so far!

My son would be all about the calves but I am making them wait a few years before we move into the cattle

Picked up one goat last weekend and the next is coming home tomorrow. Also going to check out the maroon and white sale at College Station Sunday.

You going to majors or county. First goat is a major goat and the next two are county goats with a chance at majors.

Good Luck with your goats. It won’t be long our barn will be full of pigs. We’re expecting four litters from Aug 10 to Sept 15. This is Baby Girls Sr Year. Gonna be a fun but tough year.

My son wanted 2 goats again this year so he will show at a major and county. My daughter only wanted one this year so she will only show at county. My daughter competes in a lot of different contests at the majors so she wanted to concentrate on that this year. She will go to every major and State Fair and compete in the Livestock Judging contests. She will do public speaking contest at State Fair and San Antonio. She will compete in the Horse Skills Competition at San Antonio as well. She is also thinking of competing in the Team Penning Competition in Houston as well. We will see but it will be a super busy show season for us again this year

Sounds like your going to be a lot busier than I will be. I am ready for them to move on too cattle but they arenít quite ready yet. Goats will get them plenty of ring time for a little less money if we do it right.

We went and got Twerpy a sheep a couple weeks ago, decided to name him Kebaaab.

Sheís been working him twice a day, leading and exercising him, working hard.

She is also raising a rabbit, a Holland Lop.

Her and Mrs are looking at jackpot shows, deciding which ones we will go to. Itís gonna be a busy and exciting season.

Going to try and keep up with this one. I never showed so don't know the ins and outs myself, but hoping i can get my boys into in a few years when they are old enough... only 3 right now. Bought a few commercial boers a week ago to start getting familiar with raising them. Hopefully they like it and can graduate to showing lowlines if my dad can get the right genetics in his herd.

Two Brangus heifers in the barn at my place, looking to add a grey Brahman in the following weeks. First jack pots for us start in the middle of August. Then non stop after that. I'll be helping some of the local ag kids out this year. Several kids involved in the program so we should be plenty busy. Even plan on taking a few of mine to some open shows.

Very true statement. This will be our 6th year to breed/farrow/raise our own Showpigs. We have been from winning a class at Houston, breed champion at our county show, to my daughters pig dying the day of the show in the show barn and every where in between. You truly have to love it to raise any specie of Show stock.

my daughter absolutely loves helping my brother, and neice and nephew with their pigs. She has a while to go till she is old enough to show, she is 3, but in the mean time we are currently having a barn built. Around november we are gonna get two pigs to hit up the jackpots. Hopefully by the time she is of age to start showing, she will be ahead of the game. Got the dirt work done, now concrete guy will be here tomorrow.

Where do you find jackpot listings? Is there one main place that will list a lot of them or do you have to search them out locally?

Hers one resource, also your Ag teacher and county extension agent will be aware of local jackpots and fundraisers. Most JP's are done by clubs in order to raise funds for county auction.

Do most show county animals in the jackpots or buy separate animals since the rules differ? Asking because my daughter is really into it, won grand last year at county and wants to pursue more competition.

County and major animals. It a great way to get your animals used to the stress of showing and the show ring. Also gives the kiddos a chance to learn how each animal is going to show and react in the ring. They are all a little different. Plus it seems to give the dads a great chance to practice drinking cold beer.

There is a Facebook page that lists a lot of jackpot shows. It is called Texas Prospect Show Info Page. There are a lot already listed all over the state. This is where my wife finds the majority of the ones we go to.

The town we live in has 2 shows. One is in October and is a Lamb and Goat Clinic and Show. The other is a sanctioned Steer and Heifer Show

If I may offer advice, make sure Lollie has plenty of cool shade and breeze when her calve comes. August is a tough time to calve and you can lose a new born in a hurry, especially to a first calve heifer. Speaking from experience here but the good news is you have a great breed for calving in the heat.

Mainly crosses. We will have all white (york classifying) at the barrow shows. We will have a registered duroc and berk litter. 23 litters this year so we will have a bunch. I'm in Collin County if you ever want to come look. Barn will probably open around first of September to start looking.

Yea, I heard it got a little western when the judge told a kid his wouldn't class at a major. I don't mind when people play it close but when they run a Maine as an Angus because their giving away buckles......
